This is what I have for my high school student, please let me know what seems to be missing, could be substituted, added, etc. I thank you in advance.

    Everyday Life in Early America

    Autobiography of Ben Franklin

    American Voices

    The Boys of ’76

    Lewis & Clark

    Abe Lincoln Grows Up

    The Red Badge of Courage

    Bully For You Teddy Roosevelt

    The Wright Brothers

America: The last Best Hope vol 1 & 2

    The Yanks Are Coming

    Victory in the Pacific

    Freedom Walkers

Optional: Up From Slavery, John Adams bio, George Washington & the Birth of Our Nation

This list combines SCM modules 5 & 6 (but does not reflect the assigned family read alouds), one book from EpiKardia’s US History list and a Lincoln substitution.  We could do an audio book to replace/add if this seems like too much.

Your list looks good to me. I use SCM’s recommendations in the their planning book and DVD to plan my year and it makes it much easier to see how everything will work together. This is how it works:

Make a list of the books and write how many pages each book is beside it. Then divide the books up by 3 terms so that you are reading about the same amount of pages per term. Finally divide the books in each term by 12 weeks to see how much of each book you would need to read every week to finish the books in the allotted time.

Once you do this, you can see if you’ve chosen too many books or if some of them are too long, etc. You can get a good idea of how much time you’ll need to schedule for history each day as well.

Not sure what grade your high school student is, but if a junior or senior I would consider adding in some seminal literature choices like Uncle Tom’s Cabin, All Quiet On The Western Front, The Jungle, To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Hiding Place. Again if they are in the higher high school grades I would recommend these, but not necessarily for a freshman or sophomore. Also noticed you had a couple Albert Marrin titles. I’d recommend checking out his books on Hitler and Stalin as well. Hope those help!

    Thank you.

I have the Marrin titles and will try to plan them somewhere. Good idea.  My ds has read All Quiet…. and The Hiding Place, but has not read the others you’ve mentioned, so thank you for suggesting them…I can add them for literature 🙂  He will be in 11th grade this Fall…and yes, this helps.

I just read The Yanks Are Coming for myself and really liked it. I didn’t know very much about WWI and it was very informative. Your list looks good but I would include some of the ones that were already mentioned like The Hiding Place etc. as well.

My ds has just read A Hiding Place and All Quiet…can’t remember the rest.  Maybe another bio in place of that one?

    Thanks!

Hi my3boys, what a wonderful list! Are you combining both modules 5 and 6 for your child’s 11th grade year? Also, are the books listed here for both of those years, and only for history? Do you find it will be overwhelming to add in American Literature for English along with this list? Lastly, are you also using the books in the SCM guides along with this for history? Thanks in advance for your help. 😉

    Hi Jackie,

Yes, I’m combining the guides for a US history credit for him. We may have some leftover reading to do in the 12th grade, and he knows this already, but we’ll see.

Yes, they are listed only for history, but, this ds is not a super strong reader so I may have to count some as literature for him.  Not quite sure how he’s going to handle them all. I don’t think it would be overwhelming for a strong reader or for a child who reads in their spare time, as some of these title are not really that long. I think I added up the pages for him and compared them to my 7th grader’s list and they were about the same. Or, the 7th grader had a bit more….I’d have to look at my notes on that to be sure. I do plan on creating him a list for literature because I think he can do it but he will have chemistry books to read as well.

Yes, I’m using the guides pretty much as is with the family titles and Bible portion.  He will be given the guides to work out a reading schedule for himself and then we’ll discuss it.

I hope this makes sense and helps.  Let me know if it didn’t.
