We’re on lesson 88 in Spelling Wisdom 1. We use this for both copywork and dictation–she writes the oassage 3 days in a row, then on the 4th day I give it to her as dictation. She is a slow writter, and it takes her a good 20 minutes (or would if she worked diligently…really it takes her more like 30 minutes) to copy it once. I really don’t know why it takes her so long…I could write the passages quickly in about 5 minutes. Anyway, I’m wondering if I should start splitting the passages in half and having her copy half each day. Not sure what I’d do about copying it the 3rd day, and would I still give her the whole passage for dictation?

I don’t have my DC write copywork for more than 5 minutes at a time.  If they write longer than this, their handwriting gets sloppy.  They can accomplish quite a bit in 5 minutes.  I’m also not a fan of having them write the passage multiple times.  We just started writing out the SW passage for copywork on the first day of the week, so I’m hoping this goes well, but I’m only having them write it once, plus once for dictation.

My DS was a very slow writer…He take 5 minutes on just once sentence.  I’m not sure if it was just getting older or the regular copywork that improved this, but he’s now as fast (and almost as neat) as his siblings.

My 10YO DS is very slow, too.  I do try to get him to do copywork for 10 minutes, but even 5 minutes each day is pushing it for him.  His handwriting is very nice and neat, but very slow.

When he was 6 and 7, his handwriting was terrible – a real challenge for him, so I consider this great improvement.  Given time I think he will gain speed and confidence.
