For several days, ds10 has been working on a Lego ship, complete with a captain, a hull full of food, weapons, and supplies, and passengers, headed to Jamestown. Today, he and dd9 decided to build an entire Jamestown in 1609. They made homes with primitive stoves and fireplaces; Captain John Smith even had his own home. They build a church in the middle of town. There was a corrall for the first horses brought to the New World. And even Pocahontas riding across a river on her way into Jamestown.

What a wonderful narration of our history studies! I remember reading blogs and posts early in our homeschooling journey about children who did this sort of thing, but it was always a fantasy for my own children to do this on their own, with no prodding from me. But it’s happened! It’s a small victory!

This is how I know this works. Charlotte Mason works. Living books and narration work. Not following a detailed plan and curriculum, but allowing learning to happen organically works. Yes, I am bragging on my kids, but I also wanted to encourage those of you who struggle with wondering if this is “enough” or if it really works.

It does! I have a Jamestown model on my dining room table to prove it. Wink

    Blessings,

    Lindsey
