This may not be “pure” Charlotte Mason, but how does this sound for spelling for my 9 year old:

I am going to teach the spelling rules. My son is naturally a good speller, but I want him to know some of the rules to help him out. I plan on doing a rule a week:

Day 1:  we’ll introduce the rule, and just orally come up with examples (on the white board etc…)
Day 2: I’ll have him do copywork – copying the rule with some examples into his book
Day 3: we’ll review the rule, and I’ll have him create sentences with some of the words following the rule. He’ll copy two or three into his book.
Day 4: We’ll do a dictation exercise using one or two of the sentences from the day before.

We do stuff like that too.  I also include games like word searches, scrambled words, and have a movable alphabet (Montessori) that is really helpful.

Do you have a good source for teaching spelling rules?  I was having a difficult time finding a good list, which surprised me!

One thing you may like is Barefoot Meandering’s free Spelling Journal.  It’s intended to be used along with their dictation lessons and has categories for writing more challenging words.  They are supposed to review the words regularly.

I found a link to 40 different spelling rules and the 9 rules of plurals, that I’m going to use. We also own The ABCs and All Their Tricks.

Those look great.  I hadn’t found anything like that.  I only wish it was all on one page, as our internet is a bit slow.  I have the ABCs book, but I didn’t realize there was spelling in it too…I haven’t ever figured out how to actually use it.
