Hello!  I am using SCM this year and we decided that a 4 day a week school works better for us than 5 days a week so we can do field trips, group activities, etc.  To do 4 days a week, do I make days longer by combining a day into the other days or do I just keep the schedules as written so we have a longer year?

My kids are 16, 12 (but autistic and works at a 2nd/3rd grade level), and 6.  I also have two younger children (5 and 3) who will join in on listening to literature, going on nature walks, but they aren’t starting formal school until 6 years old.

    Thank you!

I have always done 4 days/week and I feel we can get enough done. we pretty much do every subject 4 days/week except for artist study and poetry which I try to incorporate at least one day/week, sometimes more.

We go to a co-op on the other day but in the past we have done Nature Center classes, hikes and/or nature study on Fridays.

Most Science and History programs I have used were made to be used for 4 days/week.

If you are using the history guides you could just spread the one Bible/geography day over the other 4 days and not have to have a longer year. For the individual studies I would just go lesson by lesson, stopping when your year ends even if you havent finished. The science is typically only a few days a week anyway. Or just totally skip Fridays assignments, moving any critical ones like Spelling to Thursday. There are make up days built in to the history guide so that helps shorten the year. You may need to tweak things a bit for the high schoolers depending on requirements. We basically do a 4 day week also. We have a super light Friday so we can join our homeschool group for park day. Math for my oldest has really been the only subject I want to be sure to get through. I assign most everything else Mon to Thurs only. I think this year he only has math and some reading Friday.

We do 4 full days and a lighter 5th day which has its own set of subjects and books.  It could be any day of the week on any given week…Thursday this week, Friday next week, etc.  You can make use of audio lessons for your travel time that day: composer music, literature or history on audio book, etc.  It is nice to go to a park for nature study science this day when possible.  I have required math for day 5, but it is sometimes Life of Fred as a supplement to our regular math and done independently.  They read a chapter from a book which is assigned only once a week for this day.  For LA, we use SW and ULW 4 days and then journal or copywork only for day 5.  I would not do a longer year, as breaks are good too!  They are still learning at the field trips or group activities, so they can count as part of their school.

Here is a good article about the importance of field trips and ideas for where to go:

We’ve always done four days a week using the SCM history guides. We just do 4 lessons a week. We do the next one. We do school 42-45 weeks a year, basically until we finish. Sometimes I’ll skip a lesson, there are also make up days and exam days scheduled in the guide that never take as many days for us as scheduled.
