I want to use the Modern Times family history guide this year. My oldest is in 5th grade and can easily sit through a chapter reading in a short lesson time. I have two 3rd graders and for one English is a Second Language. She came over from China at age 3 and I started teaching her in kindergarten. There are still many vocabulary words that she is learning. I also have a first grader, and a 3 year old. I am looking for suggestions because I need to read smaller sections of Stories of America to my 3rd grader (because of needed to explain vocabulary and context) than my 5th and cannot think of how to keep them together for the family readings. It seems like everything will get “off.” Any suggestions on how to accommodate these needs and still be able to read the 2 chapters suggested weekly?

    Thanks!

Could the 5th grader do a different subject while you read the family read aloud and then read it to him/her self after you finish?

Thanks Kayla! I was thinking along those lines but was concerned about the younger kids getting farther “behind” him. If it takes us 2 days to get through one chapter of American History and there are 2 chapters assigned in the guide. Will that become a problem? We wont be able to stay together in history as a family.

Maybe you can read and do marration with your oldest. Your younger ones can listen (and hear the story and vocabulary) but don’t require anything of them. Use the age appropriate books for their “instruction.” They will come back around to this module when they are older.

You could also choose a word or two ahead of time grom tje days reading, tell it to your younger child(ren), explain what it means and ask for them to listen for it while you read. Then let them listen while you read to your older child.

I like pangit’s suggestion. We just finished Early modern and the book selections are wondeful. Even if she does not fully understand one book other books will “fill in”. That way you.can continue to read as a family and not feel like anyone is “behind”

Thank you! I hadn’t really thought of doing it like that. I will try that. 🙂
