Oy, I’m all over the place, as usual!  So, we are considering our history options. We’ve used SCM for 6 yrs, this year I’m finishing up the last module with my 8th, 6th, & 1st grader. So my dilemma is this: how do I combine 6yrs of history modules into 4 yrs for the highschooler next year and make sure the 7th grader will get lined up for what they will need in highschool too? As we currently use the modules, I am reading outloud all of the books, so the youngers hear what the upper level books too. It’s worked well for us so far, but now I don’t know how to make this work with 1 in high and another not far off. My oldest wants some thing more independent, like her science. She did masterbooks science and loves the schedule at the front and her own work book. I looked at MB history for her and there’s no way Stobaugh’s stuff will work for her . I have considered using Angela O’dell american and world books that masterbooks sells for the younger grades and using what she has on her own webpage for making it work for highschool BUT I’m not quite sure how that all lays out for my 3 kids.

So, if we stay with SCM modules, HOW do I do that? There’s no way we could combine the modules, it would be too much for us.  Any suggestions?

We have the same dilemma. I decided to combine modules, or at least try to. Another option would be to do Rome next year. That would give your 7th grader Early Mod in 9th, so they would get the American History I assume they need.

    2, 7, 9 Rome

    3, 8, 10 Middle Ages

    4, 9, 11 Early Mod

    5, 10, 12 Modern

    6, 11 Egypt

    7, 12 Greece

I am sure others will have great ideas.

I think I’d do Rome next year like Crystal laid out. If you want some ancient exposure for your oldest you could have her do an informal untested read of say Ancient Egypt and her neighbors one summer and the Gurber/ miller Greece book or Augustus Ceasers world by Genevieve Foster the other summer.

Remember you don’t have to learn everything in high school. You keep learning. A knowledge of how to learn, an interest, and a base to build on are what is important.
