ParticipantI need some “mother culture” recommendations for good historical fiction books for myself. I’ve been working through a lot of political science classics (Common Sense, Democracy in America, Locke’s Second Treatise on Government, etc) and need some good living books for my evening wind-down. Obviously, I am currently particularly interested in the Founding Generation, but any period of American or Canadian history would suit my current focus.
Thanks!

ParticipantI love books by Janette Oke. Easy reads, but excellent! My favorite series is the “Love Comes Softly” series, set in the late 1800’s.

ParticipantThe Prelude to Glory series by Ron Carter is excellent. It follows a few families all the way through the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812.

ParticipantThanks! I really enjoyed Janette Oke as a teenager (actually, I still have her written reply to my letter to her!), but I haven’t read her in years.
Our library doesn’t have Ron Carter… I’ll have to look elsewhere. What else are you moms reading?

ParticipantI just finished The Fountains of Silence. It was fabulous. Set in Spain after the Spanish civil war under Franco’s dictatorship. It was well researched, included articles from the period here and there. It is my new favorite historical fiction. I also really enjoy reading Jane Austen. Not historical fiction, but I learn so much about the time period from her novels. I am currently reading Ben Hur.

ParticipantLiz Curtis Higgs writes excellent Scottish Historical Fiction. She has a series based on the story of Jacob, Leah and Rachel, set in historical Scotland.
