Are either of them too outdated? Are they similar in scope? Opinions?
I know some people use Voscamp’s instead but I don’t really like her book that much… I don’t know why. I’ve tried to use it twice and the style is too… something. 🙂

I don’t think it’s ever been mentioned here before, but Matthew Maury wrote several geography texts for children. They are available at google books for free. They are very good and quite CM, imo. They may be a bit dated, but there is so much practical information and it is written in a narrative style which most children enjoy. It’s worth checking into.
For those of you who don’t know, Matthew Maury was an American geographer and oceanographer from the 19th Century. Many children’s books have been written about his life as well, incase any of you might be studying that time period 🙂

I just read a little bit about Matthew Maury and would love to read more. Do you have titles for the geography texts for children? I haven’t been able to find anything for children unless I’m doing something wrong.

We have been using Hillyer’s. It is outdated in the sense that some countries have changed. It also uses updated terms like Mohammedeans for Muslims. I edit the latter as I read aloud and use the changes in countries to add in a little history.

I know Google books has Elementary Geography, First Lessons in Geography, The World We Live In, and Maury’s Revised Elementary Geography. I really like his books. If they look too “textbook-y” to you at first, keep reading. He has good information.

Also, I know that you can read CM’s geogrpahy online, if you haven’t already. It is outdated in some parts from what I recall, but there is definitely still much to learn from it. I have never seen Hillyer’s.
A wonderful new geography book is on my wishlist for publishers to publish!

I wish I could remember the name of the Matthew Maury bio for older elem through Junior high. I will ask my mom, she’s a real fan of his. For now you might want to just google Matthew Maury bio for children.
FYI… My 4 year old son loved reading the First lessons in Geo. He callled it his own school book. However my 8 year old daughter wasn’t as crazy about it. Just like everything else, some like it some don’t.

The name of at least one of his bio’s (I believe there are more) is A life of Matthew Fontaine Maury by Diana Fontaine Corbin.
I’m forwarding you what my mom wrote to me about MM. She’s the knowledgeable one on his life 🙂

All you have to do is go to googlebooks.com and put in Matthew Maury and they bring up all his (about 25] books. There is the primary lessons and I have the combined primary and intermediate lessons. He has books on wind, water, everything. He was an awesome teacher. I have two of his biographies and he comes from a family that is related to Geo. Washington, Robert E. Lee and James Maury [his great grandfather], who taught Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.
Pretty interesting stuff for us history buffs!!

Rebekah thank you for getting all that information to me! I looked him up a little last night and was even able to find some reprints available on Amazon. The bio’s sound so interesting, I’ll look those up as well… would go really well with our Mod 5 year coming up this year. What perfect timing! Thank you so much. 🙂
