MemberHi does anyone have any neat ideas for high school written narrations? I am looking for some ways to spark new interest in our writing now we are in the last years of school. I have them do various things right now, in the way of essays etc, but am curious how others approach the writing of narrations/essays or anything else you do. I get such great ideas from you all, I thought I would throw this out, and see what you all do. Also do you do a reasearch paper at all? We are planning on going through the process, and I am curious if you came up with something on your own, or used something formal to teach it. Thanks – Linda

ParticipantI have my 8th and 9th graders write compositions using at least 5 of their vocab words. Other than that there are no restrictions. It’s amazing what they come up with – compositions related to their other studies, creative pieces, poetry, continuing stories etc. I think it helps them to use new words, as well as give them constant practice at writing.

MemberThanks Linda, good idea with the vocabulary words – I guess all and any writing is good.

ModeratorWe haven’t done research papers, Linda, but if you want to do that you might take a look at Analytical Grammar’s short course on Teaching the Research Paper. I haven’t reviewed that particular course, but the other one they have, Teaching the Essay, was short, concise, and clear. I’m assuming her research paper one is just as good. Might be worth looking into.

MemberThanks for the tip Sonya, I will look into that – I am not sure if we need to do it, but they love to write, so i thought it might be something they would enjoy. I appreciate the link. Linda
