I would love some advice on high school physical science. I was given BJU Physical Science so we have been using it. It is an old version, 2001. It seems to me this was really meant for a classroom, maybe bfore BJU had a big homeschool market??? The TM is HUGE and has a lot of lecture time assumed. There are 45 labs scheduled, which call for some items I dont have, like a bunsen burner for example.  There is also a second TM just for the labs. I thought I could make it work but now I am doubting myself. The labs are so detailed and lengthy we havent even done one yet. Today I googled a description of the lab and we were able to watch a video. So I guess my question is how many labs do I actually need to “do” and how many can we watch. Are 45 labs really necessary for the lab credit?  I was a little shocked that the lab took about a minute and a half, but there are 6 pages dedicated to explaining the setup. Am I missing something? Sadly I cannot teach science so I was hoping for more of a student led course. I think the actual textbook is pretty good, my son seems to be enjoying it and can tell me what he has learned and answe the wuestions at the end of the chapter. Hopefully he isnt missing too much without the lecture portion. Any ideas? Should we just bite the bullet and pay for Apologia? I have two you ger students so it would get used twice more. Or do you think I can make this work?

    TIA

High school labs are time consuming.  We do labs once a week, skipping a week here or there for my son.

For my daughter, she is watching a lab DVD weekly, and we will do two dissections and some other labs this summer.  It’s too much with our schedule and her lack of experience right now.  She needs hand holding.

Whether you use Apologia or not, most people do at least two years of lab science in highschool.

Do the best you can.  There are many options including online classes, local classes, some in the summer, having your student work independently or with a friend, trading favors with another homeschool mom or dad, hiring a college student to help.  Some lab intensives do two full days of labs.
