hello all this is my first post on SCM 🙂

im really excited about this method of homeschooling

we have been homeschooling since the beginning

Our Son is nearly 11 /Gr.6 this year

Our Daughter is 9/Gr.4 this year

sooooo BIG QUESTION 🙂 English is not my strength…we have struggled with a few different programs and its been good. My kids and write and speak from their heart thought their spelling and punctuation is not mastered. so this year upon researching this site we have decided to go with Spelling Wisdom + Using English Well + Jr. Analytical Grammar…..is this too much? From what i read this would be good and give them lots of practice…..the teacher i am working with(because i enrolled this year to get the funding for curriculum) asked if i would consider adding a program that would cover writing for both kids…? will all that Ive chosen not cover this aspect?…could really use the help from someone who uses this already

    Thank you! God Bless!

    Sincerely,

    StillWaters 🙂

Well, I am not using ULW yet; it is on my plan for next year.  But it does seem to cover quite a few grammar concepts.  I’m not sure you’d need JAG.  I guess my real question to you is: are you concerned about grammar or composition?  Because you could have them try out some written narrations.  However, if you are new to the CM methodology, you will want to really help them work on oral narrations first, which CM sometimes called “Oral Composition.”  You have time to cover grammar yet.  Your kids are young.

You could, if you’d like, use the book Simply Grammar, just one or twice a week.  For a more gentle approach.

We used Using Language Well with Spelling Wisdom this past year and plan to this coming year.  I think that alone would be fine for spelling/grammar.  I think that SCM was going to recommend ULW in place of Jr Analytical although I’m not 100% positive.
I prefer ULW to Simply Grammar. Didn’t like Simply Grammar at all although I know that’s a minority view.

The Using Language Well/Spelling Wisdom doesn’t cover composition although it does cover punctuation/capitalization/spelling – basically the mechanics of writing.

For composition, I would start with oral narrations. Move to written narrations once they are adept at the oral – probably a few months at least if not more. You wouldn’t need an actual program.
