I’m finally ready to ditch the Abeka program and embrace a CM education for my kids; which I wanted to do in the beginning. I just didn’t have the confidence.

I’ve been researching a lot and have found this site and Queen’s Homeschool Supplies to be very helpful. The Queen’s site offers a pretty full CM curriculum. I was wondering if anyone here uses it or has used it and what their experience was. By appearance it is beautiful, follows CM teaching principles and seems to “have-it-all.”

I’m tempted to purchase the Queen’s curriculum for both of our kids, but I’m also drawn to a few things here….any suggestions?

I have Laguages Lessons for the Very Young volume 2 and for the Elementary Child (I think that’s the title?).  We did them orally, and I used a different book for the copywork, so I hope to sell these books to help pay for this year’s curriculum.  They really are beautiful and a very gentle approach.

I have LL for Little Ones but have not used it to its potential.  My ds who I had planned to use it for was further along than I thought he was.  It has beautiful pictures for picture study that I may just use for all of my dc and the poetry is great for copywork, but the Lang. Arts portion is too young for him.

If you’re trying to decide between Queen’s products and the same type of curriculum at SCM, my opinion is that SCM products are a better value than Queen’s.  Was there something specific that you were looking at?  That info might help people to give you better advice.

Going from ABeka to Queen’s is a huge about-face.  I would suggest you ease into it by purchasing just one of Queens’ products to test-drive it and see how you like it before jumping in with both feet.  Same advice with products at this site.  Or download samples of each to get a better feel for it.

The ladies above commented on the content so I won’t add to that other than to say it was was not enough for me to justify the price. I also think it bears mentioning so that you won’t be shocked…..if it says you have 80 pages you actually have only 40 printed pages as the back sides of each sheet is blank.

I have used the Queen’s materials – we love the language lessons books – I have used three levels so far with two kids and am about to get LL for the elem child 2 for my 12yo.  I love that it is a self contained book, no printing, no pages to keep up with. I love the short lessons. You just work for a few minutes each day, every day. I love the variety. I love the poetry. We go back and reread favorite poems often.

I have also used their pictures in cursive series – combining picture study with copywork and learning cursive. very effective and not agonizing for the child.

I see no reason not to mix the scm materials and the queen’s materials if that will work for you.

We’re more than halfway through vol 1 of LLfVY with my 7 and 8 year olds. Honest opinion: We use it and they like it, but we’ve got a bit of a different situation that has us using it. I have 7 going on 8 children and the 7th has serious medical needs. He’s 14 months old and has many doctors appointments, therapies, and random hospitalizations. Last fall we had 5 unexpected brain surgeries, for example. While my 11yo is independent in many areas I needed something that the 7 and 8yo could do no matter if mommy was home or available or not. So this worked out perfectly for them.

I do think it’s a bit pricey, but it does last an entire year, is gentle, and builds on itself. So it works for us. We do have the next volume for each of the same children. Will we continue beyond that year’s worth? I doubt it, but you never know!

Thank you ladies for taking the time to share. I should clarify that before we

started homeschooling I did a ton or research. I have the entire original publications of CM, plus books by Sonja and Karen Andreola. The CM method was by far my favorite and I wanted to start using it right away. However, I felt quite overwhelmed by it and both dh and I were traditionally schooled. Our decision to use the Language Arts from Abeka was based on our comfort level just starting out and the desire to please the na-sayers of homeschool by ensuring results. My plan was to move away from Abeka at about 3rd or 4th grade and switch to CM then. However, I can see my ds, in 1st grade and my dd in K5 losing their enthusiasm to write because the Abeka program is so repetitive and frankly dull. I like the idea of someone having put it all together for me, in the Queen’s program. Compared to Abeka, I find the LLVY & LLLO to be inexpensive.

After pouring over the free curriculum here on SCM and reviewing English for the Thoughtful child I find I’m torn between that and LLVY. I like to hear that of those that have used the LL series, were generally happy with it. I find it hard to decide which level of the LL series to place my kids. Also, I kind of feel like it might “cheating” the whole CM experience by getting curriculum rather than putting it together myself. Silly, huh?

I really like the picture study I find here on SCM; but also enjoy the pictures in the samples from the LL series. I think I’m leaning towards trying the Queen’s for a year and then deciding from there. I’m glad to have some optionsl 🙂 Thank you again for your input, I truly appreciate it.

Here is link to Primary Language Lessons, which we liked:

It is a LA program that goes from 2-6th grades and we are really enjoying it.
