My daughter just turned 5 and we are starting homeschooling (kinder).  She taughter herself to write all her letters, both upper and lowercase, but not correctly (the letters are recognizeable but the strokes are not in the correct order and the words are messy). Should I start her on handwriting practice to correct the letters before going ahead with copywork?

In general, should I starting handwriting practice as soon as my children start writing?  I have a 2 year old; I’m worried about bad habits forming, but also want to be developmentally appropriate.

You’ll get lots of answers on this one. I like the Peterson Directed Handwriting stuff for early writers – specifically their word cues to each stroke. With little ones who want to write we take time to practice this with air writing and chanting. Then they chant while writing on paper or a dry erase board. The chant helps them get things in the right order until it becomes automatic.

For those not interested in writing early we just wait.

DD wanted to start writing at 3 so I got the HWT preK book and little slate.  The slate especially helped with forming each letter correctly.  I would definately go back and teach her how to write each letter correctly and then start some simple copywork watch her as she writes each letter to make sure she is keeping the new good habits.
