So it’s time to start thinking about new handicraft idea’s for next year.  Especially with our long winters.  I am looking for things that my boys who will be 13, 12, 10, 8 & even the 5 yr old can do.  Though I realize that they all can’t be doing the same thing.

Things we have done and they enjoy doing are whittling!  We’ve done the coaster/pot holders with the little square loom and I have (though we didn’t do it last year so it might be time to pull them back out) the Nifty Knitters.  But I’d love some new idea’s.  Thanks and have a great day! Misty

We haven’t tried these yet, but how about leatherwork, soap carving, artwork on bone/antlers (if I remember correctly, you live out in the country, perhaps with lots of wildlife?), wood burning, making bird/squirrel feeders, making fishing lures for next summer?

to go along w/ the squirrel/ bird feeders: making homemade suet cakes, custom mixes for your birds

make your own find it! tubes

Samaritans Purse Christmas boxes – collect travel sized items, small toys, etc and wrap the boxes – you can do this incrementally – ie as you get enough supplies for a box, wrap it and place all items inside then store it until November

learn juggling, karate (via you tube or video), or simple electrical circuitry (also can be found online)

My kids (yes, even the boys) are enjoying sewing, cross-stitching, braiding and knot-making.

Okay, I’m getting exciting about some new handicrafts myselfLaughing.  Keep the suggestions coming, please!

Is the Nifty Knitter for doing pot holder type stuff??  And are you all talking making bird feeders from scratch or can we buy a kit??

I’ll admit it, I’m not crazy about craft/handicrafts until we get started, then I really enjoy them, so….my husband is the one that takes my oldest out to work on his bike, fishing, etc., not me.  But, I definitely think we can do some things on our own (I know we can) I just need a jump start.

Do you all buy some kits to get started and if so what/who are your favorite suppliers??

Trying not to hijack this thread, but I need some ideas myself:)  Oldest has exhausted pottery so it’s time to move on to something else.  TIA

The Knifty Knitter can be used for many things – there are round looms and long looms.  With the round looms you can knit in the round (and make a hat) or knit back and forth (good for dishcloths).  My 9yo even made slippers!

The long looms are nice for scarves, potholders, or panels to stitch together for a blanket.

We are currently finger knitting. I checked out Finger Knitting by Katsuno Suzuki from the library. And we are getting ready to do some projects in Sewing School 21 Projects Kids Will Love to Make by Amie Petronis Plumley and Andria Lisle (also at our library). CUTE CUTE projects in there to sew by HAND! 🙂 They tell you what supplies to have and teach the basics of sewing. FUN.

We made a TON of hats and scarves one year after getting some yarn really cheap and I donated them!  They are fun for everyone and something that travels for in the car!  They are very much worth the investment.

I agree, with my3boys, I don’t like doing the handicrafts till we have them out and get going or even sometimes untill the next week when we bring then back out to continue and they know what to do!

Some great idea’s you are all awesome.  As far as where, I usually just head to our local wal-mart, JoAnne Fabrics or Micheal’s all craft/fabric stores and watch the adds for coupons or sales.

Some that I really like cause it has a 2 part thought are the think it tubes, my question is what have you used for the “clear” tube?  Also, the learning karate or juggling, which would be a fun way to spice things up in the boring winter!  Thanks

You can use small clear soda bottles.  Add rice and small items the kids can collect.  Make sure they make a list of the items in their tubes.  Then seal closed by adding a bit of glue to the threads on the bottle. – Easy peasy fun for a gift or otherwise.

If you really want one of the tubes that are simliar to the inspiration for this project, try looking at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, or other crafty venue.  Some places to have clear plastic tubes with lids that pop on or screw on, though I’ve not ever used them.

a sewing project my boys really enjoyed was making t-shirt pillows. We saved some special t-shirts that they had grown out of and weren’t stained (anyone with boys will get that issue : ). They just turned them inside out and sewed up the bottom and sleeves on the hem lines. Then right sided them, stuffed them and sewed the neck on the hemline from the outside. Really cute and a fun way to save memories!

Fun idea!  My “keepsake” pack rats will love that idea – “here’e the one from the family vacation, here’s the one from the family reunion, here’s the one from…..”  =)
