Howdy!  I have just received a catalogue from Great Courses, and there is a course titled “The History of the United States”.  Have any of you used it for your children?  If so, will you share your opinion?

I borrowed a set from a friend, American History but not sure if it’s the same one.  I was trying to help my son who struggles w/ language get through some of his classes a bit less “painfully.”  While the info was good, I’m thinking, it was fairly dry and boring.  Basically just a lecture series.  I honestly didn’t watch much and returned them.  I figured if I was having a hard time listening and staying focused, then he probably would.

There are lots of American history courses.  If you mean the great big compilation set—that’s a lot of lectures.  We’ve never done one that long.  We prefer to also have time to read and discuss a lot.  There are 3 different professors contributing.  I’d read the reviews on the site, those are often very helpful.  We have had both some real keepers from here, and some losers.  We tend to pick high interest topics from here, though, we’d prefer to get most of our information for core classes from books.
