I have 2 nephews that my dh and I are godparents for, and their birthdays are this time of year.  I already got them something for Christmas, but I can’t figure out 2 more gifts. 🙂

They are 7 and 6, and their parents are Christians, but are kind of wishy-washy in it, kids go to public school, and they watch TONS of TV and play lots of video games.  My dh and I are very serious in our roles as their godparents, so whatever we get them must be Biblical.  Add to it that the 7yo has just been identified as gifted (which we knew all along), so he is intellectually at least a year ahead of his peers but still very much a 7yo kid.

So any ideas?  Besides VeggieTales…  😉

Do kids that age still play dress up? I just got 3 Halloween costumes for 50% off at target for my kids. It would encourage imagination play. Maybe you could find a book with like a pirate lead character then get a pirate dress up outfit? My kids are younger and I know being in piblic school they grow out of that kind of stuff quicker.

Do you think they might enjoy Adventures in Odyssey audio stories?

Also, I picked up The Brick Bible for my boys the other day. They are loving looking at it, and remembering stories we have already read. Basically, the author created most of the major Bible stories from Lego, and photographed them. Not super deep spiritually, but may pique their interest?

At six and severn, I bet they would LOVE Life at the Pond audio stories.  Those are always a hit at our house.

Katrina – I remember looking at the Brick Bible a while back.  Unless someone else has done it since then, there were some sexually explicit lego figures acting out certain bible scenes.  I just double checked on Amazon – and the reviews are confirming what I was remembering.  Is there another one out there besides this one?  If so, please share, because my boys love legos, and while the idea is great, the heart behind the reason he chose to do it was not.
Here is one of the reviews from Amazon.com about the Brick Bible:
I don’t usually do this, but I’m going to comment on this book, despite not having read it. For those thinking this is a great way to show Bible stories to your Lego-loving kids (like I did), think again. The author makes a mockery and is opposition to our great, loving God. Here is an excerpt from his own website so that you know his heart:

“One of the best things about Bible stories is that they remind us to teach our kids the moral values that we might not think to teach them otherwise. Take for example: racial intolerance, deception, and favoritism. The four new stories added to the Genesis section of the Brick Testament website today begin with the patriarch Abraham aghast at the idea of his son Isaac marrying anyone of the Canaanite race. We move on to Isaac deceiving foreigners about his wife. Then Isaac and Rebekah bear twins, and each favors one twin more than the other, culminating in Rebekah and Jacob using lies and deception to fool blind, elderly Isaac and screw over Esau. These are not merely the upstanding (if seldom taught) moral actions of the people God chose to bless above all others, but those practiced by God himself. So parents, teach your children well.”

This is the one I was refering to:  http://www.amazon.com/The-Brick-Bible-Complete-Set/dp/1626361770/ref=pd_sim_b_5

Is there another version done by someone else?

Oh, dear, thank you for pointing that out, Laura!  I did notice his snarky attitude in his “About the Author” blurb on the book.  I was hoping it was just sarcasm, but evidently it is not!

But the Brick Bible did give me an idea about giving the 7yo his very own real Bible, and that led me to getting the 6yo a new devotion book that our family really loves.  🙂  Yay!  So thank you for that suggestion, even if I couldn’t use it directly!  Hahaha!

Sara, would you mind sharing the name of the devotions book? I’ve been looking for a good one for my 5 and 7yo’s.

Laura, I had no idea. Honestly, it was an impulse buy; I will take a closer look now. Thanks for the heads up!

“Little Visits with God” is the name of the devotion book we use. Wonderful little stories with a verse and prayer to go with them.

Check Vision Forum. They usually have wonderful gifts for boys.

I’m sorry to hear that about the Lego Bible book, that’s really disappointing.  I have a lot of friends who would love to get that for their children, but now I’ll have to give them a head’s up.

    Thanks!

We are VERY fond of the Little Visits with God.  There is at least one more, as well, called More Little Visits with God. So thankful you found something that fit the bill for you. 🙂

I’m very glad to have read this thread, as I think my sister would have gotten the Brick Bible for my guys! I’ll have to give her the heads up! How upsetting that things like this get made!
