Good afternoon!  I started on the path to teach at home in September.  We have an adopted nine yr old daughter, who has some significant behavior issues and a 7 yr old son.  Kindergarten in public school was disappointing for our little guy.  For the first time, he stopped wanting to learn, being told he wasn’t doing things right and struggled reading the way they were teaching.  Our daughter was being passed into the next grade and tested well but her retention was very poor.  So, a year after the adoption finalized, we began teaching from home.

There have been blessings for sure – the bonding our family experienced is stronger than it had been in the past 3 years.  Our son finally wants to be read to again and looks forward to our time with books.  Our daughter sometimes just refuses to do her work, despite consequences and rewards.  I have been overwhelmed and struggling to find what works.  I need a simple plan that helps me stay organized.  I am going to order the prepared materials for history and each one for their grade levels.  What I’d like to know is what else I should order so we are prepared.  They both love art and being outdoors.  We will continue to work through the summer.  Any advise would be most beneficial.

Keep in mind that independent work is for those who can work independently.   Each child reaches this point at a different age, and may come and go.

Sitting with them, or doing things orally may be needed, especially if they would rather be outside or doing art.

There are many ways to incorporate art into subjects too, such as drawing while you read aloud or combining a narration with art.
