I was thinking of using Visits to North America this year along with Early Modern History for ages 6-18.  But I’ve also wanted to read the Holling C. Holling books.  I considered using either the BF guide or the 50 States and Where to Find Them Guide along with the Visits.  Would that be way overkill?  Any recommendations on how I might incorporate the HCH books or save for another time?

The HCH books, Paddle to the Sea and Minn of Mississippi, are scheduled in the Visits to North America. My 16 is reading them right along with my 9 yo.

    Hope that helps.

It would be nice for your older children to do the Beautiful Feet maps while they are reading the HC Holling books.  I think it would add more depth to the Visits to North America curriculum.

I’m not familiar with the 50 States and Where to Find Them Guide.

We’re using 3 Geography programs this year.  😉

We have the 2 books scheduled in the Middle Ages guide (a Christopher Columbus biography and Around the World in 100 Years).  We are also doing Visits to Europe with the corresponding books.  Our third geography resource is The Geography Book which has lots of hands-on lessons.

So far it hasn’t been too much for us, but I’m willing to drop something if it gets overwhelming.  So far, we do the Geography Book lessons on the same day and time as our nature study.  I do the rest of the geography on a different day, but we do the history readings and Visits to Europe lesson in the morning and save the Visits To Europe extra readings for the afternoons.

I think if you can fit it into your schedule, it will work out.  I wouldn’t add extra time into your day to fit it in, but you could even do a HCH book in place of a science lesson or as a family literature reading.

That’s a tough one! Your littles would probably really appreciate the Holling books but the North America guide from SCM is really good as well.

I think I would do the Visits to North American as a family and just add in the Holling books for extra reading over the elementary years.

We read the Holling books as part of our history/geography studies when my kids were little and I will be starting the Visits to Europe book with my 13 year old in a few weeks. I’ve been looking through the guide and the books used and I am really looking forward to using them.

We are doing Visits to Northe America this year. We are really enjoying it. It includes HCH books in the schedule as well as other fantastic books! Currently learning about Canada and the kids and I are really enjoying it.

After reading all your comments I was reminded of what Sonya said about packing too much for a trip and becoming so weary that it isn’t enjoyable.  That’s what I think I would be doing if I tried to include either of the other programs in addition to Visit to NA.  I think I’ll just add in the extra two HCH.  I’m trying hard this year to keep in mind that less can actually be  more.

I so appreciate being able to get feedback on ideas and thoughts.  Thank you.

This old post came up in my search and I wanted to tag along. This year we did Paddle to the Sea as part of the BFB geography package, along with the mapwork. I have the other large maps that came with the BFB packs. However, I think visits to NA sounds great for us as we finish modern American history this year. Can we substitute another HCH book in place of PTTS along with Visits to NA? What about the big maps too? I don’t want to overload. My kids will be 4th, 1st and 2 tagalongs.
