My daughter is begging to sew. I’m not skilled at this and need help. I don’t want to buy any resources right away until I know my daughter will stay interested. Are there any free tutorials for beginners that are easy to see and understand online that any of you recommend?
Thanks!
nerakrParticipantDo you mean machine sewing? I found these on a quick google search. I haven’t actually tried any of these (I did watch the first one just now, though).

There are links to related content on the side of the screen, as well.
This also looks good.

eawernerParticipantAre you interested in making hand stitches? How to operate a sewing machine? Follow a specific pattern? How old is she? What does she want to make?
simple homeMemberMy daughter is 9 and received a sewing machine for her birthday. She needs to start learning the basics of using the machine and some simple projects. Not sure about patterns, that is overwhelming for me! :0
The links above look like a good start. Thanks for posting! 🙂
crazy4boysParticipantThere’s a blog called Chocolate On My Cranium and she goes through how she teaches her girls to see. From learning all the stiches and knobs to basic projects and beyond. No videos, just pictures and explanations. I wonder if any of the Homestead Blessings DVDs would be useful?
simple homeMemberI wondered about Homestead DVDs too. I don’t want to pay until I know how good the videos are first, and also if my daughter can truly like sewing or not! 🙂
Anyone here have the Homestead? If so, can a child follow along easily?
RebekahyParticipantMy DD8 took a sewing class at JoAnn’s – they are kind of expensive $35, but they offer 50% off fairly often so my daughter took the class for $17.50 and then spent about $10 on supplies to make a shirt with a sewn on applique. She used her own birthday money to pay for everything. The class was GREAT because I got to sit there with her and also learn. It’s not free, but it was nice to get the hands on instruction as well as a completed project out of it. You can bring your own sewing machine and then your daughter gets to practice on her own machine. Just another something to think about.

AprilParticipantdon’t know if you are still searching for something, but I have a free sewing school on my blog. It starts a picking a machine, taking care of it, understanding fabrics, then goes into techniques, etc. Right now I just have tutorials with pictures, but when I am done with the written versions, I will be going through and creating a video to go with each lesson. I also offer free patterns and tutorials for clothing and other things.. Here’s a link if you are interested:
simple homeMemberThanks April! I’m so busy with other things, so can I do the tutorials/videos at my leisure? Sometimes I see free online videos and tutorials that are only given at certain times. I am more likely to follow through over a period of months rather than ALL in a month, kwim?
AprilParticipantYes! Just visit the link whenever you want and it will be there. If you click on the link it takes you to them backwards but I am slowly trying to put the topics in chronological order with a picture. There is a link to that page in my menu bar. You can just click on “Sewing School” but I have only added about 6 lessons so far. I am also thinking about compiling it into a free e-book once the series is complete that you could download for free. I’ll share it here if I do that. Also, if you have any questions along the way, you can always email me or ask a question in the comments section. I do my best to answer all questions. Hope that helps you!
simple homeMemberSounds like a good plan. I admire your willingness to put in the hard working time for the free sessions!
