My in-laws got us an Android-platform tablet (Samsung) for Christmas. Anyone have any favorite Android apps to recommend? (I always see recommendations for Ipad apps…but seems like a lot of those aren’t available for Android…sigh.)

    Thanks!

Me! Me! But we just got our Kindle Fire a few weeks ago, so I am by no means and expert. A few apps that we have enjoyed so far are: Spanish Smash for simple Spanish vocab, Math Bingo, Interactice Telling Time, Math Bugaboo, California Academy of Science has a live penguin footage, USA puzzle, My Play Home (for little ones) and Montessori Words. Most of these for for ages 5-10.

I am still looking around, hoping to find some good Montessori type games. Let me know if you find any treasures!

Thanks! I’ll check these out, and will certainly come back and share if we find any good ones too.

    OK – I’ll post a few then…

AnkiDroid  (and Anki) – Free flashcard program that uses an algorythm to determine when to bring up a card, to help you memorize more effectively.   You can get a free account to sync between a mobile device and your computer.   It is kind of designed for only one person (it must be individual for the determining when to bring a card up).  The Anki computer program allows different profiles. For syncing you select a different free account for each profile.  The AnkiDroid doesn’t do different profiles, – but you can change which account you are syncing with.  You just need to be careful with the syncing with that!    It takes a bit of getting used to, but works well   We are using it for Scripture and other Memory, All About Spelling (so I don’t buy the student kit), and – with a lot of tweaking settings – I’m using it for Violin practice too.

MathOpen – free – Just got this, and not sure if I like it yet or not – basic math flashcard program – up to about grade 5.

MathPack – free – also just got it – has flashcards for about grade 1 up to grade 8.  20 different operations at about 4 levels.  Also not sure if I like it yet.

ABC’s HWT Handwriting – Free – by teachersparadis.com – Finger tracing cards with a HWoT Print Style “variation”.  I think they had another print style available too.    I am just trying it out with Foxtrot and it works pretty good.  I wish they had Italics (but the HWoT capital letters will be fine…)

Obiously the Kindle App, OverDrive (for library books), Adobe Reader, Play Books, etc…

Does that prime the pump at all?

Well I just recieved my tablet yesterday. I have FlyHelper (FlyLady’s app), LibriVox AudioBook, Cool Reader (epubs & mobi files on my SD card — much easier the stock app), Evernote, and Routinely (I’m going to put my basic schedule blocks/routines here, and it has a widget so I can page throuh one at a time.

In addition to Ankidroid, I’m trying (still learning) an app called Remember Me. It has varies modes (blanks for some words, first letters, etc) for learning text like Bible verses and poems. I also have MySword (Bible study tools) and iAnnotatePDF for marking PDFs. I’ve only toyed with most of these, but I’m enjoying them so far! I will have to check out the others.

Handwriting Without Tears has a nice app for beginning writers. There is also a game called Bad Piggies that is fun and has lots of problem solving.
