Has anyone used Exploring America by Ray Notgrass? It’s a high school curriculum combining history, literature, bible & writing? Any thoughts?

    Thanks once again!

We used this last year and thought it was really good.  We focused on the history, literature and bible part because dd was getting one on one instruction in writing from my mom, who has taught in the college setting (HUGE blessing).  I was tempted to have her do the writing assignments anyway because the subjects were really interwoven in a great way–but it became too much to do both.  It got two thumbs up from dd as well.  She found it interesting and actually looked forward to doing it every day–isn’t that half the battle?!!  Smile

    Good luck!

My oldest used this her senior year. I had her do a written narration of each lesson rather than all the other writing assignments.

Sonja did your daughter do a lot of extra reading with the Notgrass book?  By that I mean did she read other biographies and books about history at the same time, or just what the Notgrass text recommended.  Also, did she by chance do their World History course as well – or use something else?

She did that course the same year we read the books for the Modern Times History module. The Exploring Government course was part of her independent studies that year. We haven’t done any of their other courses. We didn’t do a World History course separately; world history was mixed in with our reading through all the modules.

Am I understanding correctly that you accumulated hours throughout the four years of hs? I seem to forget that at times.  Did you include her independant reading as part of her credit? I know some do and some don’t.

    Thanks a bunch!

Yes, that’s right. I believe it was Inge Cannon who described how you could get some 3×5 cards and label them with the various high school subjects/topics. Then jot down any hours, books, or projects that would count for those subjects as the child does them during the four years of high school. You can total up the hours quite easily or just count the quantity of work.

Thanks MJ & Sonya; Written narrations sound like a great idea! I’m very hopeful!

Sonya, did your daughter read both the Notgrass literature selections and the module 6 selections?

She read the lessons in the Exploring Government book and the corresponding historical documents from the We Hold These Truths book. That was for her Government and Civics course credit.

Then she read most of the books listed in Module 6 to finish up her American History and World History credits. She didn’t read a couple of the books listed in the module because of time constraints or personal reasons. And I know she didn’t read the Reagan Diaries, because I only found out about them a few months ago. Smile
