We’ve tried this book for 3 weeks now, and my kids hate it.  I thought is was great and fun, but they hate the field notes and other activities that go along with it.  Now mind you, they are 6 and 8.  I know that module 2 says for 1st graders  and up, but is this book “good” for young children in your opinion?  My 6 yo boy has a listening problem when it comes to anything that is read to him, but it seems it is worse with this book.  Have you used anything different?  To be completely honest, it works better at our house when I read over the topics and then just get a map out and show them where it is and get pictures off the interntet.  Does anyone else have this problem or am I expecting to much from a 6 1/2 year old boy?

    Thanks,

Paula (I blew up at him this morning, and now I’m feeling guilty about it)

I tend to read it out loud, skip the field notes, prayers, and questions.  (We can do our own prayers, etc).  That shortens it considerably.  I also use the internet for pictures and use maps to talk about what we are reading about. Sometimes I try to find coloring pages or let them draw while I read.  I have several kiddos that seem to “settle” while their hands are busy.  (We have 12, 11, 5, and 4 yo).

I also try to find books about the places or movies about them from the library.  That is what makes it more fun for me – seeing the places I read about. Especially if they are in color. LOL  It is hard to really “see” anything in black and white when she talks about the beautiful flowers on the hillside. I know that b&W is cheaper, but a geography book with color illustrations is much more fun to me!

I read this book when we were studying Irag – although I am sure this family was chosen by the government there to be the poster children, so to speak.  It was still interesting to see their lifestyles. 😉  No roof???  I’d feel very – exposed!

Okay, I had to take out the link – it had too much stuff in it.  The name of the book is Iraq (Families Around the World) and was an interesting blend of traditional and more modern styles of living.  The grandma prefers her little stove on the floor to the big stove and uses it in the middle of the kitchen floor.  Things like that. =)

We used this as part of Heart of Dakota’s Creation to Christ curriculum. I totally agree that this book is not a good choice for young children. Yes it is an interesting book but written, I think, at a teenage/adult level. I did several weeks with my 10.5 yr old and I would get frustrated at him b/c he couldn’t remember what I read when I asked him the Field Notes questions. I can’t even imagine trying it with a 6.5 yr old. We did pretend I was a reporter and he was the “expert” that I was interviewing and he would video himself answering my questions about the area we were studying. He had fun with that but I had to whisper a lot of the answers. My advice would be to put it away until/if you do ancients again in high school.

Give him a hug, tell him Mommy agrees that maybe he isn’t quite ready for this book and will look for something else so he can see the land where Jesus lived. Then toss the book aside and I bet you will get a big smile.  I did.  🙂
