For our area, _Rifles for Waite_ is relevant for this part of the country. I’ll bet there’s a better one for the Ozarks… I’ll look.

(maybe _Where the Red Fern Grows_ — kinda)

Well, I’ve never actually read this – tho I ought to get it when I go to the library next, but The Van Zandt County War, supposedly is a book about our area – Van Zandt County in TX. I think it is usually shelved in the juv. section of the library. If I do get it, I try to come back here and give a review!

This is a great thread by the way!

Another one for the Missouri Ozarks is Little House in the Ozarks, a collection of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s newspaper columns before she wrote her children’s books. I don’t know if it’s still in print or not.

One for Texas is The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie dePaola. (The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas, I think). The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush would work for Wyoming (the state flower again) and maybe some other Southwestern states.
