Hello. I am new to Homeschooling and CM. I have ordered a lot of the needed start-up Books. As i am browsing through week one in the Enrichment book, lesson 5, makes reference to “Journaling a Year in Nature, pencils, watercolor paint, and field guides”. Can someone please tell me whet the field guides are and where to get them? Thank you.

You will want to find field guides specific to the region where you live. I looked up field guides online for my state and region and then found them used through abebooks online.

A field guide is just a book or flip cards or app or some other media that helps you identify plants and animals in your area. When my kids were little we liked Fandex guides, they were fun. We also enjoy the free Merlin Bird app. You can set it to any region and it includes bird calls, and since its on your phone you always have it. One great way to get field guides is at your local, state or national parks. Or nature preserves. Visitor centers often have free or very inexpensive guides specific to the area. My daughter really loves birds so she has a few big fat guides, I think she likes the Stokes guide the best. I find the smaller more specific ones more enjoyable. It is easier to find what you are looking for. Anytime you go to a nature preserve or park stop by the visitor center and see what they have.  Butterfly and moth guides are super fun and easy to start with if you have little ones, my kids are still so proud they can name butterflies.

That is very helpful. Thank you. I was able to Google and find a variety pack on Amazon that looked promising.

Crystal, Thank you for insight. Now that i know what i am looking for, I was able to go to my App store for electronic options as well. I found an App called Seek that sounds extremely promising. It also reminded me of when i used to Geocache. I now want to incorporate that into our Nature Studies.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I  am one extremely excited mom at the moment.
