I am thinking about what to do for science/ nature study next year.  My oldest will be in 1st grade. This year we have all enjoyed reading living books about different biomes. And specifically learning about the animals that live in them. I have enjoyed making my own curriculum but I am thinking about following someone else’s next year….

I have looked at exploring nature with children by raising little shoots. Does anyone have reviews of this or another “curriculum” they liked? I am a little hesitant to use outdoor secretes as we live in the country and spend much time on the family farm….I am totally open to ideas now though;)

Another thought is my son loves machines and wants to know how stuff works…my husband is an engineer so big surprise. He has already had talks about how an engine works because he asked…when/how do you do physical science?

If you live on the farm Outdoor Secrets could be perfect since you would have such easy access for adding in related nature study etc… It really is sweet.

You could however look at doing 106 Days of Creation.

Exploring Nature with Children is nice, but depending where you live, it’s not well suited to northern climates that actually have a 3+ month long winter with snow. There are very few winter nature study lessons that could be done in a “real” winter.  One was looking for worms – in February! Um… Where we are, in February those worms are buried under 2′ (or more) of snow. For us almost none of February or Marchs, and part of April’s lessons would not be possible. So something to keep in mind. While I enjoyed the program, it was disappointing to us in that way and we stopped in November.

Another option might be get a subscription to Ranger Rick magazine. My son loves it, and they put out a monthly teacher’s guide with lesson ideas, nature study journal page etc…
