Editing Laying Down the Rails and other resources in CMO

    Hello ladies,

I wonder if I might be able to put in a request to help each other?  That when we edit resources such as Laying Down the Rails in the CMO, for our personal use, that we avoid editing the original entry?  Instead, could we all be careful to select ‘copy’ the resource, then when we are done with our edits that we save it for our own personal use, but not share with others?

Does that make sense? I’m not sure I explained that very well!  This is not to make anyone feel bad, but just to help us help each other.  So for example, back in August I wanted to schedule Laying Down the Rails for Children, but found that the entries were simply selections of lessons, not the whole resource.  So I went in and edited it so that the whole resource is now intered (ie each lesson). Then it’s easy – all wehave to do is select the resouce, when we are you are on the sheduler page, we simply select which lessons we want to schedule for the term.  This avoids any of us having to edit it ever.  But if one of us really feels the need to edit it, please could we keep those changes private?

I was sorting out my schedule for the year just now, and found someone has gone in and re-edited it for their private use this term, so if any of you are looking for the whole resouce, you will need to delve back into the history of edits.

    Many thanks

    Excellent points Ruth!

We need a CMO tutorial that covers this and some of the other common issues regarding edits.

I’ve just kept everything I’ve done private but that’s not much of a help either because then the Book Finder doesn’t grow to reflect all our diverse choices.  It’s stagnant.  And then we get the almost constant “I’m looking for a great book in ____, does anyone have a recommendation” posts.  Obviously we are all pulling from outside sources and it would really make the Book Finder more powerful as a schooling resource if those books were in there. Of course that assumes we all use SCMO, I guess.

Example, only one of my daughter’s literature choices was in the Book Finder but I think she has a fantastic lineup.

I agree we need a tutorial that covers issues regarding edits.  As someone new to SCM and the Organizer I am trying to find the benefits of the edit feature.  To give you an idea of where I’m coming from I recently added my own resource of a Gershwin CD and scheduled it.  I incorrectly entered the first two track names.  I have realized my error, gone in to the Organizer and edited the resource. I assumed that editing my resource whould then change it in my schedule and reports but it has not.  I presume I must now go back and remove the resource and reschedule the new one and re-account for all the work we’ve done. This sounds horribly tedious.  Also  FYI I added the Laying Down the Rails with all of the chapters as a personal resource as I did not see the PAST edit that Ruth refers to (just the problem she suggested might happen as I didn’t even consider that I needed to look in past edits.)  And unfortunately I also made a typo on one of the chapters (trying to do too many things at once – I’m sure you ladies can relate) and am now faced with the tedious task again of deleting my old history.  I’m not even sure I can delete work that’s been Worked On/Finished?????  Would Admin kindly please reply with some thoughts/suggestions/encouragement?  Finally, for what it’s worth I think it would be FANTASTIC if we shared our private resources more without fear of well-intentioned editorial hijacking.  I know I take great pains to type a lot of detail into my resources so that my reports are as informational as possible.  Thanks!

I presume I must now go back and remove the resource and reschedule the new one and re-account for all the work we’ve done.

There is a way to automatically update your schedule with the latest version of the resource. If you find the resource you want to update in the Scheduler, then click the “edit” link next to it, you should see a message above the Scheduler options asking if you’d like to update the resource to the most recent version.

Thanks for sharing your concerns, everyone. We are working on ways to make it more clear when a resource should be edited vesus when it should be copied. We’re also hoping to have a video tutorial soon.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we did an update today to add a message that shows up when you edit a publicly shared resource. It reminds you that your changes will affect everyone and offers the option of making a personal copy instead. Hopefully, that will help clear up the confusion. Smile
