http://www.christianbook.com has samples.  Honestly the samples scared me away for a while.  But, I’m thankful I tried it anyway. We’ve tried every thing over the years, included the ones mentioned in the post.  For us, this has worked the best.  I hope you find what works for your family soon.  It can be frustrating.

I switched from A Beka to Math U See this year as well.  I was terrified too… but I was more terrified that my kids were not “understanding” math and weren’t learning their addition and subtraction facts either!  That drove me to take the plunge into unknown territories… I didn’t personally know any family that was using the Math U See program. Making the switch was the best thing I’ve done with home schooling to date.  I’m soooo glad we did.  The kids understand math and are getting their add/sub facts memorized, yay!

I did have to back them up a bit in order to get used to the new program.  I don’t mind the slightest bit though!  It’s better to get a foundation for life as far as I’m concerned!

All that said, as much as I LOVE math u see… what works for one family might not work for the next.  So keep doing your research and find a hands-on, real life, living math program that works for your family!

Thank you, everyone!  I’ve been doing alot of researching and praying and decided yesterday to order from Systematic Mathematics for my daughters.  The levels I ordered will be below “grade” level for them, but hopefully this means we’ll be backing up and gaining a stronger foundation.  I’m so excited about the possibility of Math being less of a burden for our family!  I just wish I’d done it years ago.

I just wanted to say don’t be surprised if your daughters don’t take to it right away.  It’s not flashy by any means and my son said, “really, I have to watch this guy?”  but after a few lessons he really began enjoying the lessons and Mr. Ziegler’s teaching.  I think mainly because he is actually understanding it!

    Blessings!

I agree with Sharity.  Also, if you have any concerns or questions Ruth (I think that is her name) is great at talking you through things.  We don’t do every problem either.  If I know they get it, I don’t do them all.  She was good about helping me see that I need to adapt it to work for us.  If that means we do 1 page for 3 days then that’s ok.  We really do like it!  We went from tears in math with MUS to “Mom, can I do math first today.”
