My almost seven year old wants to improve his drawing. He’s very much a perfectionist if that helps you in suggestions. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for basic drawing lessons. I am not an artist but enjoy drawing nature. My son enjoys drawing what he sees in nature, but would like to have lessons on drawing realistic people (people from history specifically).  Do you have any suggestions for resources? Thanks!

Many draw in instruction books show steps in drawing and children can be disappointed when their drawing doesn’t look “right”.  We have used Draw Write Now at that age, but I tell them that their drawing will be different, unique, their own special drawing.  For grade 4, we have used Artistic Pursuits which emphasizes more on techniques and observations when drawing, which I think is much better for a perfectionist.  Because it may say to go draw a favorite toy or piece of fruit, but nothing to compare their drawing to someone else’s drawing.  Draw and Write Through History is more complex drawings with steps and has cursive copywork.  We start using it in grade 5.

Draw 3d!!!! It’s a subscription website, but I believe you can try some lessons for free. We paid $40 for a year of access through Homeschool Buyers Co-op. I was very skeptical because it is all cartoon-type drawing by Mark Kistler. Honestly,I just purchased it to use as a time filler for my younger kids. I have been so impressed with all that they have learned that I am having my older kids do the lessons now as well. Every aspect of their drawing has improved. Now when we go to the museums, they can actually draw something and make it look like an accurate representation of the original object. I cannot recommend this program highly enough. It greatly exceeded my expectations.
