Hello!  My oldest son is 5.5 years and we are working through Delightful Reading.  I am finding that reading, as of yet, does not appear to be a relative strength for him.  However, he LOVES books, and we continue to make it fun with short lessons, and I just pray he catches on.  I am setting up what we are doing for next year, as we are due with a baby very soon, and I know I won’t be able to think straight for months after she comes LOL!  I hope we are to the readers by that time.

Does anyone know:  1.  how to incorporate the readers with Delightful Reading?  Do I finish ALL the lessons in DR first and then go onto readers?  I noticed on SCM website that they say to do it together— I am just wondering at what point to begin using the readers.  I do think he will be very motivated by the readers so it would be nice to use them, yet I don’t want him to be overwhelmed.  2.  For the readers (please forgive me for sounding like such a rookie!), how do you use them?  I know for “First Steps” I first read the page in the beginning and then do I just have him read it?  I am assuming the items with an asterik are new words?

Thank you so much for any guidance/help! 🙂

Good questions. I think you could start adding in the Pathway readers after you finish doing the lessons for “Rain.” What I did was alternate and do DR three days a week and First Steps two days a week, just to add variety. Set it up however you think it will work best for your son. It sounds like you have a great handle on keeping his reading lessons enjoyable.

The asterisked words are the new ones, yes. You might find it easiest if you introduce those words just like you do with DR: write them on the board, look at them and talk about them, try to create them with the letter tiles. Those little steps should give him confidence when he gets into the reading part. If he already knows some of those asterisked words, you wouldn’t need to do the pre-reading stuff with those unless you think he would enjoy it or would benefit from the isolated review.

As you progress through the First Steps and other Pathway readers, you’ll be able to be flexible. Some stories in the book won’t take too long; others may take a while to read through. So you may want to find a good stopping point mid-story in order to keep lessons short and keep your son wanting more.

Hi Sonya!  THANK YOU for your response.  We finished “RAIN” and then moved onto First Steps.  HE LOVES LOVES LOVES First Steps.  I have a hard time getting him to STOP reading.  I let him go with it for the past couple weeks, as we were potty training out 2 year old and HS was a bit more grace-drenched. 🙂  So we will now pick back up with DR and alternate.  I actually used FS as a motivator for other lessons.  It’s very sweet and cute and he is so proud of himself.  Thank you for your guidance along this journey.

I have to say I am so grateful for the SCM company.  The CM method really resonated with me, yet I was overwhelmed how to do it and have a bit of a method.  We LOVE our method.  Just love it.  So thank you for really making an effort to make it clear what CM means to those of us who are just beginning this journey.  You were so patient and kind to me last year at the Cincinnati convention when I asked so many questions.

We are about to have our 3rd baby, and are due the day of the convention in Cincy this year.  I am praying I can go for just a bit, even just to see all the other committed HS moms and know I am not alone!  🙂  I am feeling anxious with another on the way but trust that God will provide what I need as a mother, homeschooler, and wife.

We have joined a nature center here in Cincy and truly feel that our lives have changed with spending so much time in nature.  I know I am not great at nature study (yet!!) but I do feel that so much healing and peace comes from taking in God’s creation.

So thank you, Sonya!!!  I truly feel blessed to have met you and found SCM.
