Delightful Reading Kits

My 5 year old knows his letters and their sounds but for some reason he freezes when it comes time to combine the sounds to make words!  I’ve tried introducing a few sight words (like “the”) but those don’t seem to be sinking in.  I want to keep everything he does know (like all his letter sounds) fresh in his mind (without boring him!) and I want to gently encourage him when he shows readiness for word building.  He’s not ready for All About Reading Level 1 (that’s what I used with my others and it gets into three letter words very quickly) and I hate the thought of spending money on another reading program, but the Delightful Reading kits looks so, well, delightful!  Anyone have any experience or thoughts on using that with my 5 year old?  And would I go with Kit 1 or 2?

Stacie, I do not have a lot of experience but we started with the previous Delightful Reading kit with my 5 and 7 year old earlier in the year. My 7 year old progressed to the Reading lessons fairly quickly as he had already been reading some words. My 5 year old knew her letters and sounds so we started with a little word building. It has been such a great experience. Both of my kids have thrived on this very gentle approach. We actually were using another curriculum for my 7 year old and it just wasn’t enjoyable. I am so excited for the new Delightful Reading kits and have just ordered Kit 2 for my 5 year old.  I think it will provide the additional guidance that I feel that I need in this stage. I am sure you have done it, but maybe look through the sample pages comparing Kit 1 or Kit 2. I would think if he knows his letters and sounds, that you might want Kit 2. At that same time, if you don’t feel that he’s ready, maybe Kit 1 could provide the needed review until he’s ready for word building.  And the wonderful thing is you can go at his pace. Hope that’s helpful.

    Stacie,

My daughter is 5 and knows her letters and sounds too.  She will be 5 and a half when we start school, and has shown a great interest in learning to read.  (Otherwise I had planned on not starting her until after 6)

I ordered the Delightful Reading kit 1 and 2 (When first looking I would have chosen kit 2, based on her current knowledge.  However, I have a 3 year old and just figured I would order kit 1 too while on sale.)  After looking through them both, I am so happy I ordered kit 1 and believe I will start her there.  I thought it would seem redundant, but there are so many activities and lessons in kit 1 that I believe will really drive some important things ‘home’ for her.  We may breeze through some of it and that is okay.  I figure, at her age, repetition and just doing it for enjoyment is great.

I also used All About Reading for my now 7 year old.  He is reading at 3rd grade level and we had great success with it.  I agree, that Delightful Reading seems just, so delightful.:-)  I plan on using it for my daughter and youngest son.

I don’t know if this helps, but I don’t think you will be disappointed with kit 1 for your son.  You may find just touching on the things he already knows and adding a bunch of additional activities with that will find him ready for the words he is finding difficult now.  Sometimes, it just clicks all of the sudden at a certain age.:-)

I pray this helps you a bit!

    🙂

    Renee,

I am glad you posted your thoughts after seeing Kit 1 and Kit 2. My kit 2 has not arrived yet. It makes me think my 5 year daughter could benefit from Kit 1 as well. Now you have me thinking about ordering it as well 🙂

    Tina..

I hope you think the same thing! I did look at both on the website samples but after having right in front of me, there is so much in kit 1 that I think will only help her.  We haven’t had any formal reading lessons around here, just her learning ‘whenever’ she wants to participate and from listening to brother.  I believe kit 1 will give her better building blocks than going straight to kit 2.  (But we can go through kit 1 as fast or as slow as we need..)

So glad I could help someone!

    🙂

Thank you both so much for your feedback!  You’ve made Delightful Reading sound like such fun.  I decided to just use some games we already have to start off our year and see if he’s ready to start putting the letters together yet…if not, then I’ll be adding Delightful Reading to our days.  Thank you!
