    Hi All!

I just subscribed and as a whole I really like the CM planner. I do have a couple of questions about how to add some stuff. How would you add a read at your own pace piece of literature? It is an assignment, but my son only has to read about 1-1 1/2 pages per day. On the resources that we add, do I need to go in and manually add all the chapters and assignments? and then once I do that will it schedule it for me as if I had chose a resource in the bookfinder already?

And last but not least, our bible is very loose. Can I just add a resource so it’s recorded but not schedule it? My son is an avid reader and I have a ton of books I would like to record, but not assign.

    Hi, ensundby95 –

Let’s see if I can answer your questions.

How would you add a read at your own pace piece of literature? It is an assignment, but my son only has to read about 1-1 1/2 pages per day.

Usually with read-at-your-own-pace books, I just enter the chapters then mark Worked On each day the student reads the book, and Finished the day he finishes that chapter. If he finishes chapter 1 and starts chapter 2 on the same day, I just mark Finished for chapter 1 and Worked On for chapter 2 on that date.

On the resources that we add, do I need to go in and manually add all the chapters and assignments? and then once I do that will it schedule it for me as if I had chose a resource in the bookfinder already?

Yes, once you enter divisions on an added resource you can schedule it just like a book in the CM Bookfinder. So if you manually add Book Z (title) and specify that it has chapters (division type) and enter the 10 chapters (Add division), you’ll be able to select from all those chapters when you schedule it. And the chapters will show up in the Daily Plan one at a time in order, just like any other book in the Bookfinder. How many chapters/assignments/lessons (whatever divisions you want to use) you enter is up to you. Do what works best in your situation.

Can I just add a resource so it’s recorded but not schedule it? My son is an avid reader and I have a ton of books I would like to record, but not assign.

Good question. Simply adding a resource puts it in the book database but not in your son’s records. The only way the CM Organizer connects the book to your son is by scheduling it. Now, my brain is spinning, trying to think of an alternate way you could enter those book titles without a lot of hassle. OK, here’s an idea: Add a resource called “Independent Reading” or “Extra Reading” or something like that and give it . . . I don’t know . . . 30 untitled divisions called “Book.” Then schedule it for every day of the week. In the Daily Plan it will read something like, “Read Book 1.” Every time your son finishes a book, add a note with the title and check it off as Finished. Book 2 will roll up and you can add a note with the title to that. When you fill up all 30 divisions, just reschedule that resource and keep going.

Another idea to keep in mind: We’re working now on getting that Daily Journal note feature done. When that’s done, you could just pop all the titles he read that day in that Daily Journal note and you wouldn’t have to schedule anything.

Anybody else have any tricks or tips to share on this?

Here’s one thing I did with my sons’ general reading lists. I have them pick a few off the stack they are most interested in. Then I enter them and schedule them as titles, but “schedule” them on Saturday, when I have nothing else normally scheduled. I print out the Saturday list, hand them to the child, and when they finish a book, they mark it off and I check it off that Saturday. It helps us to stay sort of “on top” of that free reading pile. If he reads something NOT on his list, then, lol, it sounds funny, but I enter it, assign it, and check it off. LOL That way it shows up on the completed work records when I print those off.

Wow great ideas! Thanks! I did get the divisions to work finally. I watched the videos a couple of more times! I think I am almost done scheduling! woo hoo! Some of it even goes into next year!

Is there any chance that you are working to add a notes section to the scheduler? That would be handy to add extra assignments for the older kids on together subjects. As it looks right now I will have to go into each day and add the assignments.

    thanks again!

Yes, a feature that allows you to add notes to any assignment as you schedule it is on our to-do list. That would be really handy!

You can see other ideas for new features, plus suggest your own ideas, on our Future Features Wish List page.
