I’m new to the forum, we are a Muslim family and my husband is Kenyan, so I’m trying to navigate very early literature with a gaggle of black Muslim boys and it’s hard.

Just wanted to thank the OP for your deep and careful consideration around these issues. Racism, as most prejudice, is insidious.  Ignoring it is as dangerous as perpetrating it IMO. I’ve been scouring the internet In search of living books that don’t degrade or exclude my kids and their history and it’s not easy. Fortunately we are teaching them Arabic and have more resources from that direction, but I’m curious if you ever found any conventional classics that weren’t so Eurocentric?

I’ve almost given up on the western “classics” for us entirely, but I’d be very happy to hear I’ve missed something

I’m not sure.  It’s been a while but Gentle Ben was a favorite.  Trumpet of the Swan, Venus Among the Fishes, A Dolphin Named Bob.

Those are off the top of my head.  And honestly if there is any prejudices in there, I didn’t see them or don’t remember It has been about 3 years since I’ve read them with the kids.

    Maybe The Black Stallion.

    Hope that helps
