Clarity on how to implement transcription?

I need clarity on transcription…what exactly is it? It seems similar to copywork and learning spelling words. I’ve read about people implementing it, but it would be helpful to have clear examples in order to understand how it’s done. For example, do they do this from memory…(memorize a text or word(s) and then write from memory)? I tried it with my children, but I’m not sure if I’m implementing it correctly.

Also, should transcription be a regular part of their lessons? Is it a necessity like narration, copywork, & dictation or can this be skipped? If needed, what age/grade should this be implemented?

    Thanks!

Honestly we’ve been doing CM for a while and I don’t know what you mean by transcription if it is not copywork or dictation. Could you clarify?

My understanding is that transcription is the natural next step from copy work. Copy work starts letter by letter, then moves to word by word. Transcription is when the student reads a few words and can then go to their paper and write those words from memory.

Dictation is when the student takes time to study a passage and then the teacher dictates the passage, section by section (a few words at a time or more if they are able to) and the student writes from memory.

So you do not schedule copy work and transcription, the student naturally moves to transcription.

I could tell when my DD started doing transcription because as I watched she would read a few words and write down those words from memory, instead of word by word. I did not teach her to do it, it just naturally happened because it us faster than word by word copy work. It was around end of 2nd grade or start of 3rd grade.

My ODS is just starting to do a bit if transcription, for very simple words, but he is still word by word most of the time.

To me, copywork is the beginning stage, when the student needs a model right on the page they are writing on, and in the same script that they are to copy.  They copy exactly what is printed, usually directly underneath the model.  They are still practicing correct letter formation, and working just a few letters at a time.

Transcription is the next stage, when the student is able to read the text from a book or other source and then write it on their own paper, in whatever style of writing they have learned.  They are still copying, so they can look back to check to make sure they have done it correctly.

Prepared dictation is when they study a passage and then write it as it is dictated to them.  They need to be able to remember spelling and punctuation and perhaps spacing or where to begin each line in the case of a poem.

    Thanks Ladies :)!

Sound similar to copywork…being new to CM it’s taking me some time to totally understand/grasp this. They do this all from memory and then look back at the passage after they’ve written it?

I’m thinking back to when my children were in public school…Is it somewhat like them practicing spelling words for a test and then writing from memory once they’ve learned it (but instead of words, it’s a sentence like a line from a poem or scripture)?

Hi Nebby 🙂, I’m still learning this…I heard/read about transcription on another CM site, but it seemed so much like copywork and that’s where the confusion came in for me…trying to distinguish clearly between the two and how to implement transcription.

Thank you Sonya! I apologize I wrote a reply before I saw your response. Ladies please disregard my follow up questions.

This does help bring a more clear picture for me. I have a better understanding now…it was nothing like what I was thinking :). It’s taking time to understand and take it all in. As you can, tell I’m totally new to CM :).

    Thanks again!
