Has anyone heard about the book series for children called the Wormling series?  I believe the first book is “The Book of the King”.  A friend was talking about this but I’m not sure about the content.  We don’t exactly see things the same way either, so I’d like to check on the books that my children read.  These are not classic literature, but mainly for quiet reading.  Another book that was mentioned was the Redwall series.  I don’t know anything about these books either.  If any of you know of these books, I’d love to hear your comments.  Thanks.  Angie

My older children have read the Redwall series and enjoyed it. You can find some reviews about it (by kids) at Incredibooks.com

My only caution with the Redwall series is to know your children well in order to determine the best age at which to allow them to read the books. The stories contain some battle scenes and intense bad guys that might be too much for some younger children.

I know Redwall, but not the other.  Redwall is about mice and rats and other forest animals – they talk and have wars and wear clothes and such.  The books (and movies) are somewhat violent.  The rats attack the abbey so the mice fight back, etc.  They’re not graphic, per se, but not warm and fuzzy either.  They have good characters of “good” and “evil” and are pretty good about showing good as good and bad as bad.  I let my boys (ages 9, 9, 5 and 3) watch the videos.  I have not let them read the books yet because I think 1) they’re for older kids and 2) they are a bit violent.  We also haven’t read them aloud for that reason.

Hmmm, I’m not making them sound appealing, am I?  I like the books quite a bit.  I am collecting the series for them (I’m collecting several series of “boy” books for when they’re older).  I think they are a great series for pre-teens/teens.  I guess it depends on what ages your kids are.  Every library has at least some of the series.  Check some out and read them for yourself to see how you feel about them for your kids.

Thank you, Sonya and crazy4boys.  I have seen them at the library too, just hadn’t picked them up yet.  My boys are 11 (just had a birthday) and 8.  I could check into the movie first & preview the book to see if my older son is ready.  Thank you so much for the comments.  I just love this forum.  If I am not sure about something, I know I can always ask the wonderful ladies on here for their opinions and that makes me feel so much better.  I don’t feel like I’m out here alone.  Thanks again.

Oh, the other series I was wondering about (The Book of the King – Wormling series) is written by Jerry Jenkins, who also wrote the Left Behind series & the Left Behind for Kids series.  My sons haven’t read the Left Behind for kids, so was wondering if any others had any knowledge of this series.  Thanks again.
