I am interested to hear if you use the visualization method discussed by Charlotte Mason. If so how is it working for you? Do you find it sufficient or do you still feel the need to teach spelling phonetically?

It works for one son but not the other.  IMA 🙂  HE is more of an auditory learner and I am still struggling with him in this area. 🙂

We did teach simple phonetic spelling when they were very young–not while doing phonics, since most of mine read on their own, but when they were six or seven.  Then we taught visualization.  Yes, it works beautifully, I have three excellent spellers with little visible effort.  This was already how I naturally spelled, so it resonated with me right away and we’ve done it for years with great success.

Can you give us a little more info, Bookworm?  I have one failing big time in dictation.  He is almost 11 and struggles with basic spelling.  Dictation doesn’t work for him at all.  I don’t know what to do with him.

    Pollysoup,

I used All About Spelling with my one son who really struggled with spelling.  At first I balked at it because it is rather expensive and time consuming, but it did help him and it has helped me with ideas for how to teach spelling for my other children as well.

    @ jeaninpa,

How exactly is All About Spelling time consuming? I am very curious because I have decided to use it with my struggling speller, but we just ordered it and haven’t started using it yet. My understanding from their website is that the lessons are supposed to be 15-20 minutes per day. Is that fact or fiction?

    Sue,

It might be misleading to say that it is time consuming, because it’s true, it probably only takes 15-20 minutes per day.  But all that time is with YOU.  There’s really no prep time, however all the class time is together.  So if you have several children and they all need that kind of individual time for spelling….. well, there’s just not enough of me to go around.  Therefore, I think it’s a great program but I would only use it for a struggling speller unless I was teaching fewer children.

Thank you for clearing that up. I have to work on some subjects individually with this one anyway since he has special needs. He is 12 but reads at a 2nd-3rd grade level, is still working on addition facts and very simple math, and he’s not ready for any of the Apologia science books. So, I would be working on spelling with him alone for 20 minutes or so anyway.

Actually, if you are using something like Spelling Wisdom (which my girls use…don’t love, but they tolerate), you would be doing the actual dictation part with them as individuals anyway, which we’re used to by now.

I’ve used All About Spelling and Spell to Write and Read.  His spelling is still horrible.  I just can’t figure out what he needs to be able to spell.  My others don’t struggle with spelling!

    Pollysoup,

My son’t spelling was horrible at 11 also.  He is now 14 and it’s better, but still makes me cringe from time to time.  (I admit it, I’m a spelling snob.)  I think that AAS did help him and dictation also helps.  He is typing most of his narrations on the computer now.  I didn’t feel comfortable with that before because I didn’t want him to only rely on spellcheck.  He’s reached a point where most things are spelled correctly, so that now I feel that spellcheck is a helpful tool for him.  All that to encourage you that your son can still make a lot of progress in his spelling and spellchecking is ok.

Have you tried any of the tactile suggestions, such as tracing letters on sandpaper or in shaving cream?  Another thing we tried was to have him move as he spelled — like jumping up one step for each letter.  Don’t give up, it will improve!!

My son who will be 12 in July is horrible at spelling as well. I believe it may his ADHD that went unnoticed until 2nd grade. As a kindergartener, he struggled with phonics and spelling but everyone thought it was because he was a “young 5 year old”.

I hate to think this but I may need to start a phonics program with him, though he sees that as “baby work”. I just don’t know what else to do. We are using Spelling Power and it seems to be working okay…but still…

For my struggling speller, I have added in a ton more copywork…ok, not a ton, but more than I was. He has 3 different copywork “programs” he’s working on. He has 2 from Queens: cursive and reg. print, along with Spelling Wisdom. I have AAS and plan to implement it when things get back to normal here and I do plan to NOT skip lessons, just get through them quickly.

For my son, he has to do the physical work of copying the word several times (not in a row, but througout the week/month) before it sticks and becomes a part of his writing vocabulary. My other ds is almost completely visual and really only needs to see a word to know or remember how it’s spelled. He does lots of copywork and I do not foresee any need for a “program” or to bump up his copywork, unless that is what he requests.

Well, just to put this into perspective regarding bad spellers, years ago (before MS-Word and spell-checkers) I worked for a guy who was an executive in our department (a “suit” as they say, MBA and all). He was a horrible speller, and I was his proofreader. Some people are never really good spellers, and they pay people like me to be their assistants! He got the big bucks, and I got a nice Christimas bonus for making him look good, LOL.
