This year I have a 9th grader and 7th grader.  We have been working our way through the modules the past couple years and are currently on Module 4.  This works out well since I typically do a world history credit for 9th grade.  My daughter (7th grader) isn’t super thrilled with where we are because she really wants to do something with American History.  I was doing some thinking on Friday and thought why not… We can work on some history she would like to do since we will be doing a world history credit her 9th grade year.  Thoughts? Suggestions?  I would continue my 9th grade son in the history guide for module 4 and he can work independently so it’s not a big deal.

While I always prefer keeping kids in the same time period to keep me sane (9 kids) around 7th/8th grade is a good time for kids to start being more independent in their learning. I would say if she’s interested in American history then let her do it, with the aim being it becomes a more independent subject for her. My high schooler started becoming a lot more independent in 7th grade by her own choice/personality. My next in line child is a boy who’s pretty laid back about it all. He’s 6th grade and I don’t see him volunteering to start more independent work for at least a year or two. We’ll see. The child right under him is a 5th grader who I think will choose to be more independent earlier. Kids can be so different!

If she likes to read you could just hand her some American historical fiction you read in her spare time or pick a really good historical novel to read aloud for fun. My mom read aloud to us at night till we graduated and we all enjoyed it. That was when we read lots of good novels historical and otherwise that did not correlate with our history. I would enjoy keeping the whole family in the same time period for discussion`s sake.
