Could anyone compare a Castle with Many Rooms to The Story of the Middle Ages  by Christine Miller? I have the Story  of the Middle Ages hand me down from my mother. Is a Castle with many Rooms better or more actuate? Mom also has the famous men books from Greenleaf, but i am thinking of waiting on those till later as my oldest will be in 2nd next year. We covered all of ancients this year and the parts of ancient Egypt and her neighbors that i used he has liked though they were almost too long.

I can’t speak to how they really compare, or the accuracy, but if your oldest child is in 2nd grade, I wonder if both of those choices are going to be too much. I just looked over The Story of the Middle Ages as a possible spine for our next run through medieval times, when my youngest will be 2nd grade, and I decided it would be too advanced for her, but just about right for my will-be-then-8th grader.

I do not have A Castle With Many Rooms, but the chapters look long – too long for a 7yo, in my opinion. There is a whole chapter in the sample if you want to read it over and see what you think. For me, I would be more inclined to do something like Story of the World 2, or even just medieval-themed picture books, like the ones SCM has scheduled in the Middle Ages guide.

I have used both, in our first rotation Story of the Middle Ages and this rotation through Castle with Many Rooms.

I much prefer Castle with Many Rooms. Story of the Middle Ages just seemed like a lot of details and specifics, higher grade level. Castle with Many Rooms has been enjoyed by my kids this year (7th and 5th) but my 2nd grader it is still a bit over his head. I think that if he was my oldest I would skip it and pick up other books about the time period.

I like the revised history guide but the old guide had many books by Louise Vernon and other readers and those were great! Our first time through Middle Ages we actually skipped Story of Middle Ages and just read all the other books suggested. I feel like the older guide had a lot more readers, so was easier to skip the spine, but I think one of the reasons for the change was that many of those readers are now out of print and hard to find.
