I’m going back and forth on buying LDTR. I would love to hear some success (or even unsuccessful) stories to help me decide. I’m struggling to believe I’ll be able to come up with creative ways to implement these habits.

I have purchased the whole set including the LDTR for children. I will say this…the DVD changed my life….LOVE Sonya!! Anyway, after watching it, we changed how we did things here in our house and things have improved a lot. Now, LDTR is not an easy thing…it is HARD!! It is a commitment and you have to learn to discipline yourself before you even get to the kids! With all that said…. my kids love the stories and poems that are already set up in the LDTR for children. I actually purchased a set of books and cd’s that I had set up to use and then bought LDTR for children and added them with the other and work on one trait for 6 weeks. Truly though I think it has had more of an affect on me than them and the changes in me and helped change them. So I totally endorse it, but it isn’t like you read it and poof everything is roses…  Here is one example I can give you…Sonya talked about laying down the rails and forming those connections in our children’s minds….they leave a coat on the floor and we tell them pick it up so we condition them to pick it up when mom says to, not because it is the right thing to do…. This was what  hit me like a brick wall…I was sooo tired of having to go through everyday saying the same thing every day. What I do now… if I see one of my kids hasn’t cleaned up after themselves then I call them into the room by simply saying, “there is some unfinished business in here.” They are left to find out on their own what the unfinished business is and who left it unfinished. This causes them to make their own connections to do what is right, not what I tell them to do….it makes them accountable.  I found that my kids KNEW all the rules and weren’t forgetful, just plain lazy because I had allowed them to be. I am now very consistent and there is no electronic time in my house until school is complete, chores are complete, and I have made a complete walk through the house and have found no unfinished business. So, as we enter a room, most times they are grabbing things and taking care of business without me having to say a word. Now I am working on them doing it without having to do the walk through!! LOL My kids are still fairly young at 8 & 9 so I feel a year with this method hopefully will condition them to clean up after themselves as a habit and we will finally be rid of those bad habits of leaving thing lay wherever. I’m also praying in addition to LDTR !! LOL  Hope this helps you and just know this is one example, but there are more and so I have found it helpful for us, but I have been the one to change the most and then the kids changed because of the changes in me. I am not yelling or nagging like I use to and kids are responding in a more positive way and this has caused me to feel more confident in my parenting and they are responding to that different mindset as well. Hope this helps you make a decision as to if this will be beneficial to your family or not.

Thanks so much for your post, cdm2kk!!

I hadn’t realized that I am conditioning my children to only put things away when I say to!  Now, I need to re-condition myself to NOT remind them and to allow (MAKE) them make their own connections.  I just hadn’t thought of that!  Thanks for the eye-opener. 🙂

Thanks cdm2kk. I appreciate your thoughts. I wish I could get my hands on the books and look at them before buying, lol. I’ll continue to pray about it and see if I think it’s something that would help us. I know our five children, ages 14 years to 14 months old, could use some character training so this would definitely not hurt. But some of the things we need to work on have to do with respecting one another and getting along, being gracious. I’d like to think some training would change things but I’m not sure some of our troubles aren’t heart issues.

I would love to buy the set as well. It’s just too expensive. I realize there’s a lot of content, but by the time you buy both books, have shipping etc…  you’re talking $80. For us, being in Canada, with the money difference, it’s $100. That’s so unaffordable for many families. Even the e-version is almost $60. It’s like the grocery store – the things that are good for you should be the things that are most affordable, and yet they’re always the most expensive 🙁 It’s too bad they wouldn’t have split it up, so people had the option of buying Volume 1 or Volume 2. It would have helped a bit.

That said, I have thought of buying just the book for the children. Not to derail from OPs question, but it does seem as though you could get away without the LDTR book? You basically just use that to read through yourself and prepare yourself, and get information on the trait, correct? I mean, if you have a pretty good idea of what the trait definition is, and how you want to see it in your home, do you really need the LDTR book, or could you get by without it?

I would buy just the books for the children to use as Character Study. LDTR has great ideas. But LDTR4C can be used by itself (in my opinion) as a character/personal development class. I like the format, definitions and little stories, poems, etc. It’s a great tool!

LDTR and LDTRfC was my splurge last year.  I splurged even further and had the books all spiral bound so that they’re easier to use.

My girls enjoy the readings; I enjoy (?) the toe-tramping I get when I read the LDTR book……We haven’t been as consistent in our use as we should be.  And I need to readjust a la cdm2kk (see her comments above).  So for right now, I’m saying that the failure is on our part – SCM certainly couldn’t have made character training any easier!

Just FYI…you could get away with just the LDTRfC because it does include excerpts from LDTR in the weekly lessons. There is even a picture of a little piece of railroad tracks to let you know that. The LDTR book just goes more in depth, but if you were ever in a pickle, you could easily ask a ? on here and someone would be able to help you. I read LDTR fully when I first got it and was overwhelmed. So now I just read the section I need to before I start a new character trait. I have watched the DVD multiple times and love it every time and I hear something new every time i listen to it, but I find Sonya’s videos are like that.

Oh & Karen, thank Sonya for the making kids make their own connections because I never saw it either till she pointed it out and even though I know what to do….I am still sorely tempted to point out each little thing that needs doing….I truly had to make it MY habit to just say unfinished business in here and that is why this is all so hard…because I am having to create new habits for myself!

cdm2kk, can you tell us which books and cds that you purchased to go along with character study? Thanks.

We’ve been using LDTR since the beginning of the school year. We’ve enjoyed it.

MrsB here is what I had purchased before I found LDTR and so I ended up combining them. http://www.singnlearn.com/Category/characterclassics

Now, I found a great deal because I received the set of books, CDs, teacher’s guide and student’s activity worksheets all in one set for about $40…they were on a clearance sale from here http://www.libraryanded.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=e0b3cab04af51963046ffc541c472615&Screen=SRCH

My kids pick and choose which worksheets they feel like doing…they are meant to be for fun and so I do not require them, but they usually do them. It is a pretty neat little set and the songs are cute and funny.
