I am looking for some suggestions for read alouds with my boy for K. We have read the My Father’s Dragon series and loved that. We are looking for more books at a similar level which also have a male protagonist. Ideas?
Joyful MamaParticipantSorry, no ideas from me! But I am interested to see the responses because I am looking to buy some read-alouds for my little boy. I also prefer stories with a male protagonist.
Karen SmithModeratorClyde Robert Bulla wrote many books at about the same level as My Father’s Dragon. Some of the books Bulla wrote are The Sword in the Tree, A Lion the Guard Us, Viking Adventure, and Riding the Pony Express. I haven’t read all his books but the ones I’ve read are pretty good. Some are out of print but you should be able to find them at a library.
At a slightly higher level, William O. Steele wrote several books that appeal to boys. His books include The Buffalo Knife, The Far Frontier, and Winter Danger. Again, many of his books are out of print but should be available at a library.
Dick King-Smith has written many books that are light-hearted and fun reads. Also, Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear books are easy reads.
Hope that helps.
Sonya ShaferModeratorHow about The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame (author of The Wind in the Willows) or Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder? We’ve been on a Robert McCloskey kick here lately, so Lentil also comes to mind.
Karen SmithModeratorRobert McCloskey also wrote two easy chapter books: Homer Price and Centerburg Tales, both of which my boys loved when they were younger.
