Hi, I am looking for book suggestions. My 7 yr.old son reads on a 3rd to 4th grade level and he wants action stories, of course. He desires superhero stories, with flying people, which I won’t get. I don’t mind some science fiction and fantasy (i.e. Verne and Wells), just not at such a young age. I think the Henty and Ballantyne stories are too high a readng level, as are the great boy stories from Stevenson. Should he start the Narnia or Douglas Bond? He’s very imaginative and I can see a bent towards Fantsay thatt I’d rather keep muted right now and direct his appetites towards historical adventure. Any suggestions?
Rachel WhiteParticipantIt’s me again. What about missionary books?
Karen SmithModeratorYour son may enjoy Clyde Robert Bulla’s books. His books are about 100 pages long with short chapters. Many of his books are historical fiction.
Also, don’t forget about authors like A. A. Milne, E. B. White, Meindert DeJong, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Marguerite Henry.
By the way, you can search for books by grade level and subject in the CM Bookfinder.
Rachel WhiteParticipantWe’re up to Farmer Boy. He loves the Little HOuse books. Read and listened to Charlotte’s web, he loves Trumpet of the Swan (not read it but has listened to it upteen times on audio)which has led him on a marvelous quest for all info and crafts Swan (he immerses himeself, w/o my help!). Read and listened to (over and over)A.A. Milne. He’d enjoy Stuart Little. I didn’t think about Henry and am not familiar w/Dejong. Oh yes, he read Bulla’s Viking book and enjoyed it. I’ll look into others. I forgot about the bookfinder, too!
amy390MemberAndrew is really liking Missionary Stories with the Millers. quite exciting but i would preview them. We read ‘the’ story about Jim Elliot and had quite a good discussion but you have to be ready for it. although he could read chapter books they are ‘too long’ in his words and I have chosen not to push.
Sonya ShaferModeratorAnother possibility might be Incredibooks. This Web site is full of reviews from kids about their favorite books. I personally know all the kids (read that “ours and Doug and Karen’s” 😉 ) and you might find some new favorites on there or motivate a child to read a book by inviting him/her to post a comment on a review on the site.
moosemamaMemberHow about The Complete Book of Dragons by E. Nesbit?
Rachel WhiteParticipantI’ve seen that book, I just was not sure if it would be apprpriate at this age. Could you give me some details about the book’s content? Again, he is prone towards an intense imaginative fantasy life, which can be used in his life for good or ill.
moosemamaMemberThe Book of Dragons by E. Nesbit is a collection of nine short stories that she wrote for The Strand magazine around 1899-1900. I am currently reading through the series with my boys for narration/reading time. My 5 and 7 year old are enjoying it and I do not think the stories are anymore frightening that some of Grimms’ tales. I think you could find it online if you check – http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu. Also- my boys LOVE Thornton Burgess’ series from Dover publishing. They are very good going to bed books.
