I am planning to use the SCM guide for Middle Ages/Ren & Ref. I want to use as many books from the list as possible, but my preliminary search is not showing many of the books available in our library. Because I am homeschooling my last child, I do not want to buy a lot of books. I definitely want to use the Louise Vernon books, but I have access to a few of those. I will buy those I can’t find. But, I was wondering if there were good book suggestions that would go with that guide, because I know I will not find all the recommended ones in the guide.

What age child? That will help us give specific ideas. Another idea is to look at book lists for other curricula set in this time period to see if your library carries any other titles (try Beautiful Feet Books and Sonlight for starters).  Here is a post I came across that shares a book list as well: http://www.airskull.com/story-of-the-world-volume-2-the-middle-ages-book-list/

    Hope that helps a bit!

    Thanks, Tristan.

My daughter will be 14 when we do this. However with her dyslexia and some processing difficulties, I was looking at the 4th-6th books. I would be reading those, although I only have Adam of the Road. I want to get the Jim Weiss audio of King Arthur. My daughter loves audio books. As far as her reading on her own, those would probably be some books listed in the lower level. Other than finding the Louise Vernon books in the family group, the Christopher Columbus book is the only one in that group I need to find. There are other books about Christopher Columbus out there, but that one really sounds good. I wish I could find some good ones on audio. Any suggestions are helpful.

When I am trying to find audio I go to Audible and search. I listen to the sample. And if you really don’t like the book you choose they have a good return policy.  I would search specifics like Christopher Columbus and general like Middle Ages history. Then look to the left and they break results down into categories like Kids, Teen, etc so you can look just at those if you wish.

I did look at librovox some time ago. A lot of those stories are read by people with strong accents, which would not be good for my daughter. I do have a list of books for this time period from a search in the library I had forgotten about. I will look into some audios and make sure I have the Louise Vernon books and then make do with what I can find at the library. I have gotten books that are recommended on Heart of Dakota for the ancients and we have really enjoyed those. I’ll have to check that site again for ideas for this time period. Thanks for the suggestions.

We skipped Columbus and Sons and Around the World in 100 Days.  Seemed like too much information and I did not care for their tone as secular resources.  We all really enjoyed The Door in the Wall, myself included.  Adam if the Road and the Louise Vernon books were good too (I think they are on kindle now).

Wings2fly- Thanks. I didn’t think of Kindle. I was able to find 2 Louise Vernon books used on eBay for under $5 (that includes shipping) Two I got from our church library. So, I only need one more. May do Kindle for that one. Did you do the Famous Men books? I was thinking about using the Middle Ages one but not the Ren & Ref one. I saw the level of reading is higher in that one. But, seeing the Greece one, and deciding not to use it, I’ve been a little skeptical about getting the middle Ages one. Otherwise, I have a long list of other books I can get at the library for this time period.
