I want to be ahead of the game next year (that’s what I always say LOL). But I’ll try. I have 3 boys who I am trying to get a feel for what I could put in there free reading suggestions bag, per say. also, I would like to have 5 family read alouds that no family should be without!
Keegan will be 12 and has enjoyed Gary Paulsen books, and just ate up The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle. I was agassed, I couldn’t believe he read that entire book in a week, but he loved it. Love anything outdoors or deer, fishing, hunting etc.
Darby will be 11 and has enjoyed Walt Morey. He’s a bit harder to get books for. And I think it’s cause he don’t really have any major interests. He also liked a Cricket in Time Square & Mr Poppers Penguins which were family read alouds.
Tierney will be 9 and has loved and finished reading the entire Little House Series. He also enjoys being creative in his building of legos, blocks, etc. He really liked The Naria series (listened on audio) and is a great reader for his age.
I am just looking for some idea’s of books that would be great read alouds for our family time. Besides the 3 boys above I have a 6.5 & 4 yr old boy and will have a (I’m sure very active) 20mo old girl and one due in October.
Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I always have the boys read them and you have yet to fail us! Blessings Misty
nerakrParticipantI’ve posted some of these before, but here they are again:
Homer Price by Robert McCloskey
Shiloh series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Henry Huggins series by Beverly Cleary
Dog books (Big Red, etc.) by Jim Kjelgaard
Black Stallion series by Walter Farley
Black Beauty by Anna Sewall
Horse books (Misty of Chincoteague, etc.) by Marguerite Henry
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
Old Yeller by Fred Gipson
Rascal by Sterling North
The 11yo may like the companion books to Cricket in Times Square (Tucker’s Countryside, Harry Cat’s Pet Puppy, Cricket’s New Home)
Books by William O. Steele-not for family read-aloud
Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric Kelly (I think that’s the author)-medieval Europe; not for family read-aloud, but good for the olders to read on their own
And begin collecting the Ramona books for your daughter. She’ll love them in a few years.

Karen SmithModeratorThe Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome are favorites at our house.
MistyParticipantthanks for the list that was great! I am really wanting to get the Swallows book and hoping to get it this summer at a yard sale or donation place! Misty
Rachel WhiteParticipantThe two oldest are ready (I assume) for the Henty books and Ballantyne books, as well as R.L.Stevenson’s adventures. Oh yes, and Rudyard Kipling, definitely.
They’re at a great age to start getting into meatier classic lit. Don’t forget the other Pyle books on the Arthurian legends and Robin Hood.
The top three can read independantly the age-appropriate books from LAmplighter Pub.
Jacob Abbot bios.
The Douglas Bond books.
I like classic science fiction, so Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Maybe some Sherlock Holmes?

LindseyDParticipantWe have really enjoyed these:
Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White (A 12yo who is a good reader could do this one by himself.)
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
Stuart Little by E.B. White (I would say that 9 or 10yo who is a fluent reader could easily read this by himself.)
(Can you tell we love E.B. White?!)
Caddie Woodlawn was a favorite of mine when I was 10.
