    I will be doing Early Modern this fall with my 5th grade/11yo twin boys.  They have already ready Sign of the Beaver twice just because they wanted to so…. anyone have a suggestion for a good replacement?  They are pretty advanced readers, should I just use the book scheduled for the next age group?  Since it’s History reading I don’t want to replace it with just any book

    Thanks for your help

    First two picks, de to similar themes:

    The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter

    My Side of the Mountain (trilogy) – Jean George

    Otherwise:

    Old Yeller; Where the Red Fern Grows; Scott O’Dell books; The Yearling; Carry On, Mr Bowditch; Blood on the River: Jamestown, 1607; Johnny Tremain;

    These are differing time periods, though

    We just finished Indian Captive as a read aloud, my 3 children, 14,10 and 7 gave it an average 9.5 out of 10 stars, Benjamin West and grimalkin, another favorite, the Fort in the Wilderness, ( then we visited the fort) Hope this helps. Martha

    Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it. The book is historical fiction so it’s assigned to help the students get a feel for the time period. If your children have already read it, then they have that already. You could pretty much replace it with any book from the same time period.

    Carry on Mr. Bowditch is on the list for the next age group and I’m sure your boys could handle the reading level. It’s a wonderful book!

    And if you do Carry On Mr. Bowditch, Jim Weiss recorded it unabridged and it’s WONDERFUL.
