I am in the midst of book ordering for next year. I realized I have some “special” books for my almost 9 year old, and a “special” book for my pre-k’er, but I need a “special” book for my 6.5 year old (1st grade) for next school year that’s just for her. This year she has read to me The Secret Garden and is currently doing Miss Hickory. She loves outdoors and nature. She is quite comfortable reading about a 5-6th grade level. Any recommendations?

It sounds like she might really enjoy Understood Betsy. Has your family read that one before? It’s one of my favorites.

She also might enjoy the Little House books.

Here are a few more that we have enjoyed at that reading level:

    Hitty:Her first 100 Years

    Calico Captive

    A Little Princess

    Pollyanna

Hope you can find the perfect one!

Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright is one of my all-time favorites. Rascal also has lots of outdoors and nature but it might be a little intense in some of its subject matter.
