Everything is running fairly smoothly right now, except for our Family BOC. I forget to get it out on Fridays to add to it, so I think I am going to start making daily entries as they come up.

My question, is this, do you add every person/event from the Famous Men spines or only those items listed in the margin of the daily plan books? I need to find the right balance. I wish there were a master list of items (people & events) that would sort of hold my hand. I know I could have the freedom to add more or less, but right now I feel like I’m floundering with the historical entries. Books, poets, composers, etc. are no problem. Does anyone have a list like this? I feel like I need a bit more explicit direction right now and then as we go along, I’ll find my feet, so to speak.

    Thank you,

    Christie

I add the persons/events that I think I will want to remember. One thing I have discovered is that when I list only the person’s name, it means little (unless it’s a famous artist or composer whom I already know well). What helps me is to put a short summary phrase with the name or event to remind me of what he/it did.

Do you have All Through the Ages by Christine Miller? The timelines in there might serve as a master list of sorts (and the book lists are a good resource too). Or if you want the master list to end all master lists, get The Timetables of History. (Yes, it’s 848 pages long. Smile

    Sonya,

When you mention the timelines from All Through the Ages are you suggesting that there are *timelines* to purchase from the site? Or is it more like a book with resources??

I’m debating whether or not my children *need* a visual timeline in addition to the BOC.  We have been faithful to the suggested entries and my 7yo and I have been adding his Module 5 historical figures with a short summary (my son gives me info and I add some, but not too much).  I have made a timeline for another history program that we aren’t using right now; it’s a little big (or maybe they should be or would a smaller/notebook type be better?).  My 7yo would enjoy the process of making one and being creative with the figures.

I have read of some suggested timelines with figures from knowlege quest or some other site; maybe some one will chime in and help me out with those sites:)

    Thank you in advance.

The timeline figures I have are from Homeschool in the Woods.  It is reproducible and comes with a small timeline that you fill in the details.

Thanks, Nina.  I’ll be checking it out:)

I have also been very bad about having the kids make entries in their book of centuries. I plan to stay on the ball next school year.

I failed to reply previously, but yes, I have and like All through the Ages, I’ve used it as a reference for extra books and timeline info, but I have failed at translating that to our BOC. I’m resolved to do a better job with this, b/c I can tell the difference from when we were doing timeline work and now.

Thanks, Sonya, for reminding me that I have the resource I need at hand.

I’m SO coveting that All through the Ages – it gets Rave reviews everywhere online.  For those that have it – do you LOVE it?  Do you use it for adding extras to the history modules – seems like it would be perfect for a little supplementing.

Okay, we have a BoC and use it as regularly as possible.  My 7yo is beginning to add characters from history Module 5.  Should he be doing that or is he still too young. Should/would he be better off using a visual timeline?  My 11 yo uses the BoC for making entries from the 106 Days, but has not begun adding anyone from the BoC yet.  Still waiting for the 2nd book for his book list.  He’ll add people as we get into the books.  My concern really is for my 7yo.

What do you all think??  We began a timeline with a different program and I love the idea of it, so I guess I better get started:)

Sorry for the delay, my3boys. We were driving back from the Texas Homeschool Book Fair.

All Through the Ages is a reference book that has a booklist compiled in chronological order and taken from the catalogs of several faithful publishing companies. It contains timelines for each time period, as well as the book suggestions organized by grade.

I think your BoC is sufficient for your 11yo. Your 7yo could go either way. You might ask him which he would prefer. He might want something just like big brother or something different. Smile
