    We have the following already:

    – Now We Are Six by A. A. Milne
    – When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne
    – A Child’s Book of Poems by Gyo Fujikawa
    – Read Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young by Jack Prelutsky

We also read the poems included in our Shirley Hughes collections, in Story Time (My Book House Vol. 2), and in What Your Preschooler Needs to Know.

Is that a sufficient collection for this age group? I’ve been considering adding one or several from the list below but am unsure of the amount of overlap.

    – My First Oxford Book of Poemsby John Foster
    – The Random House Book of Poetry for Children by Jack Prelutsky
    – Poems and Rhymes – Childcraft Volume 1
    –  Sing a Song of Popcorn: Every Child’s Book of Poems by Mary Michaels White, Eva Moore, et al.

Would love some guidance and your favorites.

Favorite Poems Old and New and The Book of 1,000 Poems are good!

We enjoy both Sing a Song of Popcorn and Random House Book of Poetry. There might occasionally be an overlapping poem, but truthfully, it is like finding a friend in an unexpected place. My girls really love Jack Prelutsky’s poetry. We hear him at least once a week. 🙂

    Don’t forget Mother Goose.

We have 3 different versions of the Robert Louis Stevenson book with different artist’s illustrations and that changes the poems.

If you don’t mind using a kindle book, AO (Ambleside Online) sells poetry books which I have found useful through the years.  Their first book is an anthology and is organized by the months of the year, so it contains selections based on the season.  I think it is for year 1.  I have also read aloud from Poems Every Child Should Know, an old anthology with good selections.

We enjoyed the A.A. Milne books, A Child’s Garden of Verses by Stevenson, and Mother Goose.  Our favorite Mother Goose books are ones illustrated by Rosemary Wells and Richard Scarry.  If you want older, classic illustrations by various artists, you might like The Glorious Mother Goose selected by Cooper Edens.

We also enjoy Favorite Poems Old and New.   One of our favorite anthologies of older poetry is A Child’s Treasury of Poems edited by Mark Daniel.  We like the paintings from the late 1800’s – early 1900’s which are included throughout.  My 6th grade dd selects many of her poems from here to memorize.  I recently found another poetry anthology focusing on animal poems, also edited by Mark Daniel and published in the same style.  It is titled A Child’s Treasury of Animal Verse.  My 9th grade son likes Robert Frost’s  Seasons.  I hope you find one you both enjoy!  Don’t worry too much about overlap.  Just enjoy the poems together!
