We’re fairly new to CM methods. We have been doing read alouds for the past 2 years as a part of our Home learning. However we’ve never done narration. I have always asked my children a few questions about what we’re reading to see if they’re listening and retaining.

I just read the free e-book on narration and I’m trying to read other things to make sure I have a good grasp on this. But how do I begin? Do I tell my kids “we’re going to start doing narration.”  And how do I explain to them what we’ll be doing and get them to understand the concept?

I know at least one of my kids will be reluctant and I don’t want to start out on the wrong foot.

    Hi Christy!
The very best source I’ve found on narration is the first DVD in the Learning and Living set that SCM has. Sonya is at a conference and has the audience narrate a story she tells and it makes the entire process so clear.

The set is an investment though, so my recommendation would be to just start putting a pre-cursor in front of what you are reading by letting your kids know that you want them to pay full attention so they can re-tell the passage in their own words after you have completed. Start small – one “thought” per narration – even if that’s just a paragraph or two.

You can also demonstrate narration for them, or let them know that narration is just like telling a friend a story about something that happened.

We switched from Public School to SCM two years ago (we’re about to start our third year) and narration was rough at first but it has gotten so much better. I did have to use the Narration Bookmarks (they are free in the SCM Bookstore) at first to help get the thoughts flowing.

[Another thought – if your children are reading well enough for it, do a role play by having them read to you and you narrate back 🙂 ]
