Hello ladies, I am wondering how many of you use this thing called Audible?

I just got an email from a good friend because they now have the Great Courses available and she is always highly recommending them.  I understand there is a monthly fee, but what do you get for that amount?  How do you listen to it?  Can someone with a limited amount (4G) of internet use this?

    Thanks

I have an audible subscription. I buy a certain amount of credits that I then use to get audiobooks over the year. They download to iTunes just fine. I have an audible app on my phone. I don’t expect it uses any more bandwidth than downloading other things.

I use it. They are owned by Amazon and tie into your Amazon account, but they insist on monthly membership fee be automatically deducted. They have a great 3 month intriductory price and then the normal price kicks in. For the membership you get one credit (or book) to use, but they also have sales where you can purchase extra credits for less. You can load it to iTunes and listen to them, burn them, load them to iPods, etc. You can load them to Kindles that support sound and use it with the books you are reading – you can choose which mode you want and it will start either audio or words where you left off.

I use it to get some of the books like the Narnia series that are not in the public domain and I burn them to disc. We just got back from a cross-country trip and enjoyed The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, among others from Librivox.

The only thing that really drives me batty is that when you burn them to disc, they have the little breaks every 10 minutes, but it is not where the chapter ends. That is not a big deal with the iPods, but it makes it hard to know how to stop other books. 😉  I use Librivox for most of my school books so I can deal with that issue easier.

I have the Narnia series, Rascal, Swallows and Amazons, etc from Audible.

Note though, that I was able to get most of the these books are available free from my state or local library as part of their new ebook online device selection (called Libraries 2 Go nationwide) and you are allowed to burn them from there as well. (I did have a couple that would not burn properly, but most were fine.)
