Yay!  I figured out how to start a new topic!  🙂

Audible has a “get two audio books free to try us” thing and I’ve newer great things.  I’ve never tried Audible because I’ve been out off by the price but I’m not sure I’m accurately understanding how it works.  I’ve read Mystie’s tricks for getting more free books from Audible (which I will post a link to after I find it again) but can anyone give me a run down on how it works?  Their site just confuses me.  Am I limited to one per month?  Are they mine to keep?  Can I make CD’s from them?  Etc.?

Also, if I try it, what are two don’t even think about missing books for us to get?

Thanks all! So glad the forum is back!

That should be I’ve “heard” great things and I don’t see an edit post button yet.

HA!  Now I do.  Don’t you love watching the ultimate non-techy learn the new bells and whistles?  🙂

I subscribe to audible. I’ve bought 20 credits at a time and currently I have a plan they do not even advertise – I think it’s 1 book a year or something just to keep my credits active. I like buying up front instead of monthly bc I like having my credits all at once and don’t like a monthly cost. Either way works the same.  The most common plan is 1 or 2 books per month  others are called gold or something and you get 20-25 for $200 or something similar  (Not checking the specifics right now and going from memory.) I checked the blog you linked and those look like good ways to save  I can say that for me audible is worth it even at regular prices and certainly worth it with special deals!

Once you have credits you use them on audible or Amazon to buy audiobooks. There is something called whispersync that allows kindle books and audible snooks to keep pace together.  We’ve used this for some books. You buy the kindle book and are then given option for whispersync purchase for 0-few dollars.  Apart from whispersync, Most audiobooks are 1 credit. Some are 2.  I got the John Adams by McCullough for 1 credit and it would have been $60+ to buy.  At the cheapest plan price of $14.95/mo you get 1 audiobook of your choice per month  that is yours to keep forever. You can burn it to cd or load it on a MP3 player.  Robin, I could talk you through it sometime if need be. It’s super easy once you’ve done it.

Do not miss – the Ralph Moody books narrated by Cameron Bierle (sp?), Phantom Tollbooth narrated by David Hyde Pierce, LOTR by I forget, but it’s a great British voice, oh and perfect for right now is A Christmas Carol narrated by Tim Curry. I’ll have to look and see what others we’ve enjoyed, but those are off the top of my head.

    Does that help?

We use Audible, too. I have burned CD’s, which work well in the car because the CD player picks up where you stopped (if you don’t take the disc out). However, because the chapters are not used to make the “breaks” in the burned CDs, it is hard to stop one at the right place. That is frustrating to me if I am not wanting to gulp 80 minutes worth of one book. There may be a trick to this that I don’t know, but this has been my experience. Also, from what I can tell – you are only allowed one CD burning per book.

That said, we have all the ones that Christie listed, plus the Narnia series and many others. They are worth the investment, in my opinion. We generally listen to them on my lap top now (I have a USB plug-in speaker)  and this allows me to move all over the house to listen and keep track of our books by chapter.

I rarely burn CDs bc it’s one more thing to keep up with. My kids have iPods and I just put the stories on those and on my iphone. It’s easy to simply pause and resume on these devices.  I have burned CDs in the past and have not run into the burn once and that’s it.  We have an old iPod nano that is our van ipod.  I load stories on that one for when we’re in the car and it’s a story were all listening to together. My van has an aux plugin that connects via the iPod/iPhone speaker hole. Older cars may not have this, but I believe there are cassette converters and such. iPods/iPhones handle audiobooks and pausing beautifully.

    Happy listening.

Well I signed up.  Now I have 2 credits to use.  Decision, decisions.  Can I get as many of the free whisper sync titles as I want from Amazon?m there are lots of good, free classics on there.

I may have to pick your brain, Christie, for tech support.  🙂  I’ll have to figure out how to listen in the van (2009 Honda Odyssey.)

Get a Christmas Carol with Tim curry.  It’s a do not miss, perfect for the season.  You’ve read and own so many books I’m not sure whether to suggest one you know or one you don’t. If you haven’t read the McCullough John Adams, it’s a huge bang for your buck! Also, there is no limit on whispersync titles. Some are free. Others aren’t. I do always listen to samples as the narrator matters to me.

I also have Elizabeth enright’s series The Saturdays that is a huge hit along with The Moffats and Rufus M. Oh, do NOT miss Trumpet of the Swan read by E. B. White himself.  I think that is my all time favorite audiobook.

As for tech support I’ll help however I can. I have an odyssey, too. I think it’s a 2010.

We’re listening to A Christmas Carol, too. The one by Tim Curry.

I  love that you can sample each narrator because, like Christy, that matters to me. The speed of the reader  is really important to me right now & I’ve always had to have it “sound” right, if you know what I mean.

We listen from my ipad at home as we are not in the car all together like we used to be.

Audio books can be over $25 each, so I think this is a pretty sweet deal.

Quick question – with the whisper sync feature, can a person listen to and read the story at the same time?  As in actually follow along with their finger under the words as they are being read aloud?
